Customers of the Virgin Media broadband service account for
32% of internet traffic to
Netflix UK, which
streams unlimited movies and TV episodes to computers and other online devices. By comparison BT customers only accounted for 21% and Sky Broadband grabbed 19%.
ISPreview.co.uk has been attempting to get more information since yesterday, when we reported that Netflix UK traffic was showing strong growth among PlusNet subscribers (
here). Sadly many ISPs don't have enough data to share (Netflix UK only launched last week) and even PlusNet said that, despite strong growth, Netflix still only ate 60Mbps of their overall bandwidth during peak times.
Thankfully Netflix also gave a presentation at yesterday's meeting of the
United Kingdom Network Operators' Forum (UKNOF), which revealed a few very rough and extremely
preliminary statistics about their UK launch. One ISP was even kind enough to furnish us with a copy.
Netflix's entry into the UK market is in the
very early stages and many people still don't even know about its existence. The general statistics above, when combined with PlusNet's data from yesterday, suggests that the service has made a good start but is still a long way off having a significant impact.
