Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today released their Q2 FY24 financial results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow more slowly to total 1.292 million customers (up by 27k in the Q2 vs 42k in Q1 FY24), while their mobile base increased to 18.242 million (up by 218k vs 104k in the previous quarter).

Broadband ISP Plusnet has today become the latest internet provider to introduce their own round of Black Friday targeted discounts, which slashes the monthly price of their various hybrid-fibre (FTTC) and full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages on Openreach’s UK network by a few extra pounds.

Openreach (BT) has published an update on their Exchange Exit Pilot, which recognises the “resource-intensive nature” of the work for ISPs and has thus reduced the number of exchanges involved from five to three. All of this forms part of their plan to shut 4,500 exchanges, which will impact various broadband, PIA and Ethernet services.

The deployment of a new gigabit-broadband network by FullFibre Ltd in the Cotswolds village of Broadway, as well as in nearby Willersey, reportedly resulted in ambulances and an arrest after residents made a strong protest against the UK operator’s plan to deploy telecoms poles in the area.

Openreach is developing an additional phone line product, which does NOT require a broadband connection to function and will be targetted at vulnerable and edge use cases (inc. CNI) users with old analogue phone lines (PSTN) who would otherwise “face challenges” in migrating to an All-IP (Internet Protocol) based solution by 2025.

After a long pilot, Openreach has today revealed that the commercial launch of their Single Order Transitional Access Product (SOTAP) for UK ISPs will take place on 1st December 2023. The new product makes it possible to offer a standalone ADSL broadband line with optional IP-based (digital) phone services.

The BT Group has published their latest H1 FY24 results to September 2023, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added a record of 860,000 premises to their coverage (up from 718k last quarter) and now covers 11.85 million premises, with a further 6m where initial build is underway.

UK ISP BT has published their latest biannual (October 2023) update on the progress they’ve made in delivering Ofcom’s flaky 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The operator has so far built a USO connection to over 7,681 premises (up from 7,000 in Apr 2023), with 185 further builds in progress (down from 800).

Given that today is Halloween, it seems only fitting for Openreach (BT) to announce that they’ve just deployed their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to the village of Pluckley in Kent (England), which has been named by the Guinness World Records as the most haunted village in Britain.

Ofcom has today decided NOT to change how it calculates one of Openreach’s regulated Quality of Service (QoS) standards for Ethernet and Dark Fibre repairs, which would have replaced the current “on-time repair” (OTR) target with a “mean time to repair” (MTTR) alternative.

Hundreds of thousands of premises on Openreach’s increasingly forgotten G.fast (SOGFAST) broadband network are being left to suffer the misery of diminishing ISP choice as providers scrap their old packages in favour of newer, faster and more reliable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) services. But those who can’t access full fibre are being left neglected.

Network access provider Openreach has begun a new “hyper-care” trial that is designed to help improve the handling of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband orders that have been in the tail (waiting to be delivered) for more than 100 calendar days, which will essentially put those orders through a special review.

The big branding change continues. Some 18 months have passed since UK telecoms giant BT announced (here) that EE would – over time – gradually become their “flagship brand for our consumer customers” (i.e. converged broadband ISP and mobile plans etc.) and another shift begins today, alongside the launch of their 1.6Gbps package.

UK ISP Sky Broadband will later this morning launch a new 100Mbps “Full Fibre” plan to complement their existing packages, although it appears to be priced at the same level as their existing 145Mbps tier – this may raise a question mark over what that means for the existing package.

The Essex County Council (ECC) has announced that Openreach (BT) has officially completed their state aid supported Phase 4b contract under the Superfast Essex (SFE) project, which helped to extend gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband lines to another 3,559 premises in hard to reach rural areas.

Customers of UK mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone, specifically those taking their original Pro Broadband (Pro 1) package for homes, have been informed that the included WiFi booster device will soon lose the use of its built-in Alexa voice assistant. This is because the new home broadband app they’re planning to launch doesn’t support it.
