Network operator Axians UK, which forms part of the €22 billion Vinci Energies group, has just announced the acquisition of Novo Technologies, a Scottish-based provider of end-to-end telecoms infrastructure solutions for both Carriers and Enterprise clients. The deal is being hailed as one that could help to build the nations “5G backbone“.

The Government’s Valuation Office (VO), which has just become part of HMRC, appears to have begun hitting builders of fibre optic broadband networks with an increase in the rateable value (RV) of their fibre infrastructure (aka – Fibre Tax), which in some cases has hiked costs by up to around 30%. Not ideal given the well known strains in the sector right now.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today notified UK ISPs that they’ve launched a new special offer on their 1Gbps speed Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) lines, which will give providers a fixed price rental for new provides so long as they commit to at least a 3 or 5 year minimum contract term.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today provisionally found “reasonable grounds for believing” that wireless broadband operator IX Wireless (supported by UK ISP 6Gi / Opus Broadband) broke its rules by failing in its duty to minimise the visual impact of a 15-metre metal mast / pole when it was installed in Rochdale during 2023.

Network operator TfW Ffeibr (TFW Fibre), which is an arm’s-length initiative setup by Transport for Wales (TfW) and thus the Welsh Government, has today announced that their railway based full fibre broadband and Ethernet network has been extended off the Core Valley Lines train-tracks and into the heart of Cardiff’s city centre – all the way down to Cardiff Bay.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has launched a new high speed Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) product called OSA Mobile. The new fibre optic data capacity link is designed to connect UK street furniture (lampposts, street cabinets, etc.) to support the rollout of 4G / 5G Small Cells and front haul applications for mobile operators, as well as public WiFi hotspots, CCTV and broadcast applications etc.

The UK telecoms giant, BT, has confirmed that a subsea cable repair ship, which is needed to resolve the recent break between Evie on the Orkney Mainland and nearby Westray, has been delayed due to bad weather and will not now arrive to carry out the work until next week. But local 4G mobile connectivity has been improved.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has informed communication providers that, following Ofcom’s recent Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), they’ve increased the exemption amount for Excess Construction Charges (ECC) on new Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) lines and Dark Fibre circuits (1-2 Access Link variants) from £2,800 to £3,680 ex. VAT.

A BT subsea fibre optic cable that runs between Evie on the Orkney Mainland and nearby Westray, which forms part of an archipelago off the northeastern coast of Scotland, has suffered a “major” break that’s disrupting both broadband and some mobile (Vodafone / Three UK and O2) connectivity for over 500 customers in the North Isles (inc. Eday, Stronsay and Sanday).

The UK telecoms regulator has today published the outcome of their major Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which largely tweaks their existing approach to market regulation in order to help promote competition and investment in gigabit broadband (1000Mbps+) and business connectivity. The FTTH Council Europe and IDATE have today previewed their 2026 ranking of the 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and coverage of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks. The data sees the UK pass 24.2 million homes (up by 2.79m in the year) with take-up of 48% (up from 37.1%). But coverage growth has slowed.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed some of the first results from their ongoing trial of a new technology (here), which harnesses the operator’s existing fibre optic broadband network to detect mains water leaks. In just three months, it’s already pinpointed 100+ leaks and is estimated to be saving 2 million litres of water a day.

The London Fibre Group has revealed that they’re seeking Code Powers to help them design, build, own and operate a new fibre optic network, including Dark Fibre and shared duct infrastructure, for use by other communications providers (wholesale) to expand their respective broadband and Ethernet networks across the United Kingdom.

At present most fixed broadband networks in the UK are focused on deploying 10Gbps capable XGS-PON based full fibre (FTTP) technology for retail ISPs, while less than a handful are playing with 50Gbps (50G-PON) technology (here, here and here) and CityFibre has talked about 100Gbps for the mid-2030s (here). But the next gen 200G PON technology is also making progress, and it’s a major shift.
