Network operator EXA Infrastructure has today announced a new plan to deploy a high-capacity hybrid data transmission route between New York and London, which will use a mix of existing subsea fibre optic cables and a new Microwave wireless link to deliver ultra-low latency transatlantic connectivity.

Reputable internet provider iDNET, which has been around since 1996 and offers a variety of fibre broadband and Ethernet services to UK homes and businesses, has moved to boost their wider network resilience against “rogue JCB digging” by partnering with Zayo to install their own Dark Fibre Ring for 360Gbps of extra capacity.

Network operator and UK ISP Vorboss, which is investing £300m to deploy a 100Gbps full fibre network (Ethernet and broadband) – dedicated to business – across central London, has today launched a new 25Gbps service exclusively for its channel partners (resellers, ISPs etc.) as it continues to unlock high capacity products for businesses.

Edinburgh-based business broadband ISP Commsworld has announced that they’ve secured a 10-year contract – worth £2.6m – from Dundee City Council (DCC) to help plan, design, migrate and manage a “completely new fibre network service” for 42 schools in and around the city.

Civil engineering (utilities contractor) firm OCU Group appears to have established a new Stockport-based company called Artemis Fibre (15129999), which sounds as if it might be looking to deploy and operate its own UK full fibre (FTTP broadband, Dark Fibre and Ethernet) network to help serve the needs of their clients.

A new project has claimed that “residents and businesses” across the London UK boroughs of Wandsworth, Richmond upon Thames and Merton will benefit from the rollout of a new full fibre broadband and Ethernet network, which is being supported by Boldyn Networks, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and Transport for London (TfL).

Finnish network firm Nokia and the Zayo Group, which runs a large global metro and long-haul fibre optic network, today claims to have set a new North American distance record for fibre optic data transmission on a live network by using a single wavelength to reach speeds of 1 Terabits per second (1Tbps) over a distance of 1004km.

Alternative network operator Telcom (ClearFibre, WeFibre, HyperCity etc.), which via its UK brands is building various 10Gbps capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet networks across the Midlands and North West of England, has won a deal to deploy their network to cover businesses at the future £400m St Michael’s site in Manchester.

Paris-based Vantiva, which was formerly known as Technicolor (they make a lot of budget broadband routers for ISPs), has today announced the completion of their acquisition of CommScope‘s Home Networks business. CommScope also supplies network technologies to internet and full fibre operators in the UK and elsewhere.

The Zayo Group, which operates a large metro and long-haul fibre optic network that delivers global reach, has announced an expansion of their “near-net” that will put their 100Gbps capable connectivity within reach of thousands more businesses across Western Europe (inc. the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, and France).

Network operator Neos Networks, which runs one of the biggest 34,000km long business fibre networks in the UK – spanning 550 exchanges, 90+ data centres and 676 Points of Presence (PoPs), has today upgraded their Managed Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) product to provide capacities up to 10Gbps as standard (previously it only offered up to 1Gbps).

UK ISP BT and its digital incubation team, Etc. (that is their actual name), has this morning kicked off the first pilot of an Electric Vehicle (EV) charger that has been repurposed from one of Openreach’s old street cabinets, which was “traditionally used to store broadband and phone cabling“. Up to 60,000 more could follow.

A major UK newspaper has suggested that some alternative broadband operators, many of which are deploying new gigabit-capable full fibre ISP networks, are being “lazy” by failing to hand over information about “when and where they are working on BT’s network“, which allegedly risks “exposing hospitals and banks to cyber attacks“.
