The UK Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP and BCAP) – sister bodies to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) – have today set out new guidance for how broadband ISPs and mobile operators should communicate mid-contract prices hikes to consumers, which will make such policies clearer and more transparent.

Mobile network operators Vodafone and Three UK (CK Hutchison) have today confirmed that they’ve reached a formal merger agreement, which is said to be worth an estimated £15bn and will see the former party owning a 51% slice of the business (CKH will hold 49%). But they’ll still have to satisfy the regulators, and that may require concessions.

A new alternative network builder called NIO Net LTD (NIO Group) has revealed that they intend to build and operate both a Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network, which they’ll then wholesale out so that retail broadband ISPs can sell related packages on to homes and businesses.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to stop publishing its annual summary of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds after the next report is released later this year (due Q4 2023). Mainly because they deem that it’s no longer needed as the market has changed.

The Shetland Islands Council (Scotland) has given the green light for Shetland Telecom, which is the arms-length network operator that the council set up some years ago, to apply for Code Powers – ahead of a possible move to expand their full fibre broadband network to reach the remotest homes and businesses.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today updated their Network and Information Systems (NIS) guidance by lowering their thresholds, which will require UK Operators of Essential Services (OES) – such as top-level domain name registries, DNS providers and internet exchanges (IXP) – to inform them of less severe outages.

Network and data centre operator ServerHouse, which already serves over 300 residential and business customers in Hampshire (England) using a hybrid network of “full fibre” and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) connectivity – across both urban and rural areas, has revealed tentative plans to upgrade and expand their coverage.

Ofcom has this morning announced that it will NOT block Openreach’s proposed “Equinox 2” discount scheme for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP products from being introduced, which came after rival networks raised competition concerns over the plans.

The Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) has published their 2023 National Delivery Plan, which calls on the UK Government to help support ISPs to get more people in disadvantaged groups online, such as by cutting Value Added Tax on broadband ISP and mobile bills to just 5% (currently 20%) – similar to other utility services.

Ofcom’s Spring 2023 report into UK fixed line broadband and mobile coverage has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 48% of the UK (up from 42% in Sept 2022), while 73% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 70%) and 73-82% of premises can get outdoor 5G cover from at least one operator (up from 67-78%).

Ofcom has today published their 2023 UK study of broadband ISP, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, faults, repairs, compensation and install times amongst the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (78%), while Plusnet secured the highest (89%).

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to update their Earth Station Networks (ESN) licence so that the new generation of Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) platforms (e.g. Starlink and OneWeb) can be used at sea to “deliver improved maritime connectivity.”

The CEO of mobile and broadband ISP Vodafone UK, Ahmed Essam, has joined other retail internet providers in publicly calling on Ofcom to approve Openreach’s proposed “Equinox 2” discount scheme for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based products, which is being challenged by alternative networks (AltNets).

Ofcom has today published a new analysis of the impact their “Text-to-Switch” (Auto-Switching) system for UK mobile operators (e.g. EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK), which was introduced in June 2019, had on consumers. Overall, the new system has fuelled a strong increase in consumers switching mobile operators.

Belfast-based UK broadband ISP Fibrus, which is currently deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Northern Ireland and England, has today revealed that they’ve begun the next phase of their rollout in the North of England – targeting 125,000 premises across 40 locations.

A relatively new UK network builder called X-Fibre has revealed that they’re planning to roll-out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to “surpass” 10,000 homes across parts of Surrey, West Sussex, and Hampshire “within the next five years” (i.e. by 2028).

Ofcom has announced that they’ve launched a new enforcement programme, which among other things will investigate whether TelNG Limited, ETC Telecom Limited and Number Services Limited have failed to pay charges for phone numbers they have been allocated.
