Customers of Sky Broadband have until now been able to get free UK weekend calls alongside Sky Line Rental (£16.40 per month), thanks to the included Sky Talk Weekends option, yet it’s been noted to ISPreview.co.uk that this feature has vanished from Sky’s site only to be replaced by a new range of paid plans.

Residents and businesses living in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides have finally benefitted from the on-going BT and Digital Scotland project, which has successfully deployed “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC) services to 3,600 premises in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

BT says that in the future their Internet and phone related UK engineering tasks could be improved, especially in remote rural areas, by harnessing semi-autonomous flying drones to “deliver urgent parts for our network” or provide “temporary broadband access” (please don’t call it Fibre-to-the-Drone).

Customers taking the ‘up to’ 17Mbps capable Sky Broadband Unlimited package may be displeased to learn that its standard price, after being reduced from £10 to £7.50 per month for the past year, is to later this morning be increased back to its original level of £10.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has announced plans to create 400 new customer service jobs across the United Kingdom, with around 200 going to their contract centres in Scotland (100 at Uddingston, 50 in Livingston and 50 more at Dunfermline) and the rest to their bases in Newcastle and Stockport (England).

Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic, which offers home broadband speeds of up to 1000Mbps across growing parts of several major UK cities (particularly London), has introduced a “no contract” option for new customers who take one of their unlimited usage Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based packages.

A recently elected Highlands MP in Scotland, Drew Hendry (SNP), has called for a radical change in Ofcom’s regulatory policy that would allow UK mobile phone customers to exit their contracts without penalty if they suffered from poor or no signal coverage. But notspots or areas of weak signal are common.

Customers of PlusNet who also take the ISPs BTSport TV offer (only available via the Sky Digital TV platform), which gives them access to BTSport channels 1, 2 and ESPN from just £5.99 per month (HD for an extra £1.50 a month), may be unhappy to learn that the price is set to almost double.

Internet provider BT Business will today introduce a new offer on their standard broadband (up to 17Mbps ADSL2+) products, which means that new customers will benefit from being able to take the first three months of service for free (available until 30th August 2015).

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, fresh from picking up the state aid fuelled contracts for Epping Forest (Essex) and rural Gloucestershire, has today picked up another win by securing a deal to roll-out their 1000Mbps FTTP broadband network to parts of remote rural Berkshire in England. Call Flow Solutions will also deploy some slower FTTC.

Smaller businesses that have taken up residence at the Deeside Enterprise Zone in Flintshire (North West Wales, UK) have complained that they’re still only able to get superslow sub-2Mbps broadband download speeds from BT’s local infrastructure and some will leave if the situation isn’t corrected.

Mobile and Internet provider EE UK, which is in the middle of being gobbled by BT for £12.5bn, has today been fined £1 million after Ofcom found earlier this year that the telecoms operator had broken its rules for governing how you should handle customer complaints (General Condition 14.4).

New research claims that the first Superfast Cornwall contract, which recently completed and expanded the reach of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 95% of premises in the English county (up from the original target of 80%), has so far delivered a local economic benefit worth £186.1m.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has officially announced the winners of their 17th annual 2015 Internet Industry Awards, which saw Hyperoptic pick-up the prize for “Best Superfast Broadband” provider (third time in a row) and they also secured the gong for “Best Consumer Fixed Broadband“. But there were many more categories and winners.

Cable operator Virgin Media has quietly dropped the price of their entry-level Big Connection package, which is now offering unlimited superfast broadband speeds of 50Mbps and free weekend calls from £5 per month for the first 12 months (£17.50 thereafter).

The ITS Technology Group, which helps altnets to roll-out fibre optic connectivity and also provides its own services, has this morning announced that they’ve acquired yet another fixed wireless broadband provider in Wales by scooping up Cardiff-based Konek-T for an undisclosed sum.
