Europe Clarifies State Aid Rules for Infrastructure and Other Markets

The European Commission has today published guidance on when public spending falls within, and outside, the scope of EU State Aid control. The new guidance doesn’t specifically change the way in which we already understand state aid to be applied to broadband infrastructure, but some may find its clarification(s) useful.

Government Push Superfast Broadband to 3.84 Million Extra UK Premises

The Government’s £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK project, which aims to expand fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) cover to 95% of the United Kingdom by 2017/18 (possibly rising to 97% by 2019), has issued its latest progress update to confirm that 3.84 million extra premises have now benefited.

Virgin Media UK Confirms Trial of Faster Broadband Upload Speeds

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’re currently trialling faster upload speeds amongst a few existing broadband customers on their network.

UK ISPs Sky, BT and Plusnet Sweeten Broadband Discounts with Gifts

Sky Broadband has added a £100 M&S e-Voucher to their Sky Fibre Unlimited (up to 38Mbps) service (currently £10 a month instead of the usual £20), while Plusnet has added a £50 Cashback voucher to their 12 months free (normally £9.99) ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband deal and BT have introduced £75 to £125 Reward Cards across all broadband and phone bundles.
