Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net service, has just published a new Q1-Q2 2021 (H1) study of 5G mobile broadband performance from Three UK, EE, Vodafone and O2 (VMO2), which found that Three delivered the fastest average (median) download speeds of 231.07Mbps. But Vodafone wins on uploads (19.69Mbps).

The first customers are now starting to connect via Netomnia‘s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the South West England town of Cheltenham, which is being supplied via local ISP partner YouFibre as part of a £24m rollout to cover 80,000 local premises.

A new report from market analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence (BI) has perhaps stated the obvious by concluding that the recent UK mega broadband and mobile merger between O2 and Virgin Media is “unlikely to trigger a chain reaction of mergers,” which is because there “simply aren’t many easy or credible deal options left.”

Business and residential UK ISP Glide Group, which has built a national UK “full fibre” broadband network that reaches over 100,000 premises, has announced that their network is being extended to reach businesses in Corby (Northamptonshire), including on the large Corby Gate Business Park (i.e. an upgrade to their previous copper network).

Virgin Media (VMO2) has announced that 7,800 additional homes in the Manchester suburb of Moston have just been put within reach of their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband and TV network, which means that residents can now access top download speeds of 1,130Mbps.

Openreach (BT) has published the next – Tranche 5 – list of 86 UK exchange locations where they plan to move away from old copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur in areas where over 75% of premises can get their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

Back in April 2017 the UK Government introduced a welcome 5-year holiday on business rates for new fibre optic (FTTP) broadband infrastructure, which is due to expire next year. But now concerns have been raised that some alternative network (AltNet) ISPs may not yet have the necessary certificates to benefit.

VXFIBER (inc. subsidiary LilaConnect) has today announced that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the large town of Colchester (Essex, England) has started to go live, with some 1,200 homes across Berechurch and Shrub End now able to get it installed.

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has today reduced their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based business broadband package prices by up to 25%, which means that prices now start from £21 +vat per month for a 35Mbps (median average speed) broadband-only service excluding line rental, or £35 with a phone line.

Broadband provider Scotnet, which mostly focuses upon serving rural areas in Scotland, and new market entrant Tewdric Energy have today, separately, both hinted at future plans to build a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of the United Kingdom.

Three UK has today revealed that their new 5G (mobile broadband) network has just gone live in another 110 locations across the United Kingdom (300 in total), which they claim has pushed their “outdoor population coverage” (not geographic) to 29%. The current rollout plan aims to reach 2,500 new sites over the next few years.

Civil engineering firm Avonline Networks has today confirmed what we revealed back in June (here), which is that they have secured a 5-year contract to help UK ISP Ogi (formerly Spectrum Internet) rollout a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service across South East Wales. But we do get a bit more detail.

UK ISP G.Network has today announced that they’ve signed a new deal with the Westminster local authority in London, which will see their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network being extended across over 1,800 extra buildings, encompassing nearly 20,000 social housing flats over the next 3 years.

The UK Government will today publish the next phase (inc. Phase 1a, 1b and 2) of their £5bn Project Gigabit programme, which in this batch aims to spread 1Gbps capable broadband ISP networks to a further 1.85 million rural premises (2.2 million confirmed so far) across 26 counties in England. Gigabit vouchers have also been boosted.

UK ISP Ecom, which is currently building a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to reach remote rural communities across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, has now managed to extend their fibre to reach homes in the villages of Hillesden and Steeple Claydon.
