O2 UK Launch New Monthly Mobile Rolling Plans

Thursday, Oct 13th, 2022 (2:40 pm) - Score 6,056

Mobile network operator O2 UK (VMO2) has today announced the launch of their new ‘Rolling Plan’, which they say will give customers who need added flexibility the ability to pay monthly for their data (mobile broadband), minutes, and texts, without committing to a long-term contract.

At this point some people might start to become a bit confused because O2 already offers a 30-day option on their Pay Monthly mobile plans, but the new ‘Rolling Plans‘ are designed to be more of a hybrid between Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) and Pay Monthly.

Customers on the new plan will, for example, be able to change their data and international minute allowances to suit their needs and usage, or cancel the plan at any time. You’ll also be able to setup reoccurring payments, not unlike a Pay Monthly plan. Similarly, if customers use all their data allowance early, they’ll be able to buy a new monthly plan to start at any time, allowing them to switch package when it suits.

The new Rolling Plans are available to both new and existing customers alongside the following launch offers until 28th December 2022.

New Rolling Plan Deals

£10 for 25GB per month and unlimited calls and minutes (Usually is 10GB)
£15 for 70GB per month and unlimited calls and minutes (Usually is 25GB)
£30 for 200GB per month and unlimited calls and minutes (Usually is 150GB)

Just for comparison, O2’s cheapest Pay Monthly SIM-Only plan on a regular 30-day term costs £20 per month for unlimited minutes/calls and just 1GB (GigaByte) of data, which is not a particularly attractive price point. The same money on a 24-month term would get you a data allowance of 120GB, as well as various other bonuses etc.

Gareth Turpin, Chief Commercial Officer at VMO2, said:

“At the time of a cost-of-living crisis we know some people are looking for more flexibility, which is why we’ve created Rolling Plan. For those not wanting to commit to a fixed-term contract or having to top up a Pay As You Go SIM each month, these plans allow customers to only pay for the data and minutes they need in a way that suits them best. It’s the ultimate hassle-free mobile plan for those that just want to keep things basic.”

Customers will also get other benefits, such as access to O2 Priority, which gives exclusive access to events at O2 venues as well as a range of deals and offers, and free roaming in the EU. Data rollover will also be available on the Rolling Plan, so that customers can rollover any unused data over into the next month.

These rolling plans are good value and they’ve taken a leaf out of their budget Giffgaff service by allowing you to renew early if you run out of data

The big networks are realising that more and more people are turning away from contracts and wanting to switch to other networks to save a few pennies. Buying a phone direct is becoming more and more popular with Samsung and iPhone users especially. I’d certainly never go back to a contract. Giffgaff suits me fine at £6 a month

      I Agree,

The best bit about gg has always been the ability to buy a new goodybag early – Nothing more annoying than when you have run out and can’t do anything about it!

Interesting that EE used to have something similar called Flex plans that operated along the same lines that VMO2 is doing.

A good idea and one that all operators should really be doing.

Although O2’s press release mentions it being a hybrid between Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go, it’s actually built on O2’s PAYG platform, so no 5G, VoLTE or Wi-fi calling. But you get up to 10% back through O2 Rewards, just like Big Bundles.

In fact, this is something for current Big Bundle users happy with their current O2 service who don’t need to top up their phone using cash. After all, Big Bundles automatically renew if you’ve got money left and if you already use Auto Top Up, then Rolling Plans will work in remarkably the same way, but with a bit extra data. 3GB more on the £10 plan once the current promo period is up, 5GB on £15.

Current Big Bundle users also get three months extra data by texting MORE to 2424 by 28th December 2022.

And this is where it fails as 5G, VoLTE and Wi-fi calling should be provided as standard regardless of who you are.

Three and Vodafone are leading here whereas EE and O2 should follow.

      Again agreed,

Even 1pmobile – who demand a pawtry £30-£36 for 1 years service – give you 5G on EE and wifi calling. I have used them now for years as I spend 99% of my time on wifi calling anyway

5G is a premium feature. WiFi calling and VoLTE aren’t really selling points and are more expected.

You could just get an 02 SIM only contract from Money Supermarket! I pay £6.70 a month for 4GB of data and unlimited texts and minutes

      @janet walker
Remember that those SIMs require a credit check. These don’t, so are aiming for a different audience.

    6. Avatar photo Ben says:

Couldn’t imagine being on 4GB of data – I’d use that up easily in a single day – probably quicker!

  4. Avatar photo Ell says:

5G is not a premium feature tho as Voxi, Vodafone, Smarty, Three, Giff Gaff etc all offer it as standard.

As to claiming that VoLTE and WiFi calling are not selling points, I beg to differ as for me they most certainly are which is why Giff Gaff is not a attractive network for me.

    1. Avatar photo keeper says:

Also, 5G is a device killer. I had to send back a home broadband device which had written on the box ” Designed for the high temps or 5G!” because the heat had damaged the CPU and (probably) all the tiny spys that were in it

So yeah 5G is crap – I don’t use it anymore as I value my devices
