As predicted last month (here), the Stelios-linked easy® family of brands (i.e. easyJet, easyMoney, easyCar) has this week launched a new UK mobile operator service called easySim.global, which is focused on giving people low cost travel data (mobile broadband) to use all around the world via eSIM.
Prices tend to start from £3.50 for 1GB (GigaByte) of data and that will last for a 7-day period, although most of their data plans run for 30-days before expiry and the pricing will vary between countries. For example, a 20GB data plan for the USA on a 30-day expiry will cost £34, although that same plan rises to £60 in Canada and falls to only £25 in Germany.
The catch here is that there are already a number of other global eSIM providers, which often work in a similar way (e.g. Airalo, Holafly) and have similar pricing for certain plans and countries, although experiences do vary. On top of that, the eSIMs can work over either 2G, 3G, 4G or 5G connections, but support will naturally depend upon the capabilities of the local network operator(s) that handles the roaming at your destination.
easySim.global is a new business formed by Portsmouth based telecoms entrepreneurs Jim Guest and Richard Gwilliam, with the support of easyGroup Chairman Sir Stelios Haji Ioannou.
Sir Stelios said:
“easySim.global is a new way for travellers to get low-cost mobile data worldwide. It’s simple to use and great value, so the company is perfectly aligned with easy® brand values and I’m delighted to be working with the directors to get new customers onboard.”
The eSIM will work in almost all countries and is compatible with a wide range of Smartphones. But one caveat is that most of their plans seems to be restricted to a maximum data cap of 20GB, while we’ve seen others that can offer more, but this will vary between countries.
Is this a rebadged Three Austria product? I notice that in the FAQs they mention the APN is drei.at
On the face of it, at least you can use the eSIM in a number of countries. i.e. when selecting France it says:
“Also works in Austria; Belgium; Bulgaria; Canary Islands; Croatia; Cyprus; Czech Republic; Denmark; Estonia; Finland; Germany; Greece; Hungary; Iceland; Ireland; Italy; Latvia; Liechtenstein; Lithuania; Luxembourg; Malta; Netherlands; Norway; Poland; Portugal; Romania; Slovakia; Slovenia; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; Turkey; Ukraine; United Kingdom; Vatican City”
Personally I would have expected to see a bit more competition on the eSIM front. Pricing seems expensive in some markets – across all eSIM providers.
I have been with https://esim.net/ for years. Not sure I would use anyone else.
For the EU Popit do 100GB of roaming for £25 up to 6 months in a row.
Not sure how these eSIM companies aren’t fighting for their lives, since you can also use Popit here.
Regarding esim[.]net, we applaud anyone using an eSIM provider to beat the roaming charges from their home network. If you plan to use more than 20GB, their offer is good value. We are much cheaper for the majority of the population that use between 2-5GB for a 2 week period.
Regarding Popit, they are not a travel SIM provider. Their roaming charges are £6/day for 500MB in zones 2-3 and a whopping £11/day for just 50MB in zones 4-5.
@4chAnon
This popit, that deal you mentioned for 100gb if I take that with esim the whole 100gb I can use whilst roaming let’s say in Portugal for example? Thanks
Woefully expensive. ESIM.net provides all you can eat Vodafone roaming service for £27. Why would anyone bother with such a grossly expensive and inadequate plan? What am I going to do with 20gigs, exactly? Not much. Needs to be far higher.
Do they not enforce their Fair Usage Policy?
‘Fair Usage Policy for Data
500GB for UK and 25GB in the other 74 countries’
O2 is cheaper at that site, only £25 compared to Vodafone’s £27.
Good to see a alterative enter the market though.
Not commenting on value, but YMMV when it comes to data usage.
Last time I was abroad I had 12GB via Three and it was more than adequate since allot of the places I was at had wifi and I download allot of media prior to travelling.
I’m with 1pmobile and unless I’m mistaken, I’ll be able to roam up to roam up to 14GB.
I just brought the 7 day France eSIM for £3.50 and there is no sim on my account to download to my device and they haven’t even sent an email to confirm the purchase. Lots of bugs in the back end once logged in.
We experienced a technical glitch with our automated system yesterday, but this was resolved quickly. We are committed to providing an amazing service, so we would be really grateful if you could let us know what bugs you experienced – and we will get them resolved immediately.
Esim.net…
Works pretty well for me when I went to Germany recently.
Noticed this over the weekend.
eSIM looks to supported/provided through Truphone and the mobile service for at least some, if not all through Three Austria.
Can’t see the reason to buy this while having roaming included in O2.
O2’s inclusive roaming doesn’t include all the same countries, so there are always locations where you might need a travel SIM. But in the other locations, O2 is likely to be better value if you’re already with them.
Our service is targeted at customers that travel outside of Europe, where inclusive roaming is not available. However, we have seem many sales from UK customers travelling within the EU, which suggests not everyone has free roaming included.
An advantage over esim[.]net is the network access. In many countries they can use more networks than esim.
In the UK, for example, they have access to all 4 networks, while esim[.]net only uses O2. This makes them a good option to test the different networks or when travelling around the country as you can always use the best network for that area.
They’re not the cheapest option, but they do bring something different to the table and that’s a good thing.
eSIM.net have direct relationships with O2 and Vodafone in the UK, hence why only one network there. When roaming in up to 75 countries there will be multiple high quality networks available. Also unlike other typical data-only eSIM services there is a UK number for voice and SMS and unlimited calls within those 75 countries. One of the very few to provide that.
Thank you for acknowledging a key advantage to the https://www.easySim.global service, where in many countries we offer multiple Tier 1 providers, giving our customer the best choice for coverage and network speed
I’m surprised at how expensive. I do tend to use a lot of data on holiday.
For example I am currently in China. I could have got a a three Hong Kong roaming sim 40GB for around 30 ukp
Though ultimately I felt it might be short and went for an 80GB local sim (of course in China I needed a vpn too). I’m on track to use at least 70GB
Waste of Money for Indonesia. Java and Sulawesi sloooow Internet using easysim.global, Edge mostly, 4g by accident. 16gbp for 10gb. 25days, 24 7 Phone turned in but only 2.5 GB used due to Bad service. Bought local Sim in Jakarta for 9 Euro with 25gb. Used in wifes Phone and all time 4g with brilliant bandwidth. Easysim Not recommended for Indonesia
Hi Ralf.
I am sorry you did not have a good experience. Did you try both networks we partner with; Telkomsel and Three?
We support 2G through to 5G so this feedback is surprising. Did you raise a support query?
