Some sources have indicated to ISPreview that reputable mobile network provider giffgaff, which is owned by Telefónica and uses the associated Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) provided by O2 (Virgin Media) in the UK, are allegedly testing the possibility of offering full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages via nexfibre’s network.

The rather generically named alternative network ISP UK Fibre Networks, which operates an 8Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in central York (England), has today announced that they’ve re-branded to Fastr Broadband as they continue to roll-out their network to 8,000 homes and businesses in the city centre.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has followed a similar decision in the EU by clearing the move by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to acquire Juniper Networks for an all-cash transaction for $40.00 per share (here), which represents an equity value of around $14 billion (£11bn).

Rural focused UK broadband network B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is a community benefit ISP that has rolled out their 10Gbps FTTP network to 25,000 premises across England (inc. 13,000+ customers), has announced that existing CEO Michael Lee is to step down on 1st September 2024 and be replaced by Tom Rigg.

New analysis published by High Speed 2 Ltd, which is a non-departmental public body that is wholly funded by the UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT), has claimed that the HS2 rail project could help “thousands of properties” across 538 postcodes to gain access to “ultrafast broadband speeds” and better mobile connectivity.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that their 5G Ultra service, which uses 5G Standalone (SA) technology to deliver faster mobile broadband speeds and better performance in other areas, has now been made available to Enterprise and SMB (business) customers in the UK. The service originally launched for consumers over a year ago.

Asset reuse specialist AssetHUB has today claimed that an estimated 100,000km of publicly funded full fibre broadband cables in UK rural and hard to reach areas, allegedly worth over £1.4bn (total state aid), could be “left underutilised due to a lack of visibility” and “despite open networking being a condition of receiving taxpayers’ money“.

A recent study has warned that Starlink’s (SpaceX) latest broadband and Direct to Cell based satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) are somewhat brighter than the company’s previous spacecraft, which risks adding to the headaches that observational sciences (e.g. astronomy) already have to tackle.

Alternative broadband ISP and network builder Grain (Grain Connect) claims to have broken their previous home installation record of 36 minutes (here). The event occurred yesterday after a new customer signed-up and had a brand-new Full Fibre (FTTP) broadband service installed into their home in just 29 minutes.

Telecoms focused legal firm Trenches Law has revealed to ISPreview that, “due to industry conditions”, they’ve taken the decision to close Trenches Wayleave Ltd, which is the branch that was set-up to help various UK full fibre broadband operators to simplify and manage the often complex wayleave process (legal land/property access agreements).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has published some of the responses they’ve received from fixed broadband ISPs and mobile operators to their consultation on enhancing network resilience in order to “reduce the risk of network outages“ (here). Suffice to say that many operators are balking at the costs of deploying national battery backup.

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 1.22% (17.55 million) in Q1 2024 (down from 1.6% in Q3 2023) to end the quarter on a total of 1.45 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK jumped to 7.2% (up from 1.5% in Q3).

People looking to join Sky’s sibling NOW Broadband ISP sub-brand, which is better known for its NOW TV streaming service, may like to know that they will today launch an additional 300Mbps full fibre (FTTP) package via Openreach’s national network. Previously their fastest package topped out at 100Mbps.

A new ruling by the Scottish Lands Tribunal, which could have significant industry-wide ramifications, has re-opened the contentious issue of land ownership and rent reductions on UK mobile masts (inc. rooftop sites), such as those that may occur when mobile or wireless broadband operators attempt to renew an existing lease at a much lower rent.

Eastbourne-based alternative UK broadband ISP Lightning Fibre, which fell into administration earlier this year and ended up being acquired by existing backer Foresight Group via a new company called LF Holdco2 Ltd (here), are now seeking Code Powers from Ofcom for the new holding company in order to continue their full fibre build.

The MD of UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has today pointed out another potential issue with Ofcom’s new One Touch Switch (OTS) system for quicker and easier switching between broadband providers, which could conflict with the statutory 14-day cooling-off period.
