The Welsh Government (WG) has moved into the final market engagement phase of their proposed £70m (state aid) “Extending High Speed Broadband Reach in Wales” (EHSBRW) project, which aims to help upgrade broadband for some or all of the remaining 84,000 premises (i.e. those that can’t yet get “superfast” speeds of 30Mbps+).

A couple of weekend newspaper reports have stated that the Fern Trading (Octopus Group) backed Y Corporation appears to still be gearing up to launch a new UK mobile operator of their own, which would be backed by a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement with Three UK. But readers of ISPreview will know that they already tried this last year (here) – leaving many early adopters confused.

The One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCo), which is the industry-led company responsible for helping to implement Ofcom’s solution (One Touch Switching) for easier and quicker UK consumer switching between broadband and phone providers, has this afternoon revealed that they’re aiming to go live with a switching solution for businesses in “early 2026“.

Sky Broadband Max Hub Router and WiFi Max Kit 2023

Several customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband have now informed ISPreview that the provider’s support staff have recently notified them about the launch, next month, of new WiFi Max hardware. This appears to reflect both the Sky Max Hub router and the Sky Max Pod WiFi extenders.

Rural-focused ISP Quickline, which is deploying their own gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless access (FWA) broadband networks across rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England, this week said they were “proud to say our customers don’t have to worry about unfair [price hikes]” after continuing their price freeze.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT Group, which is primarily focused upon and based in the United Kingdom, has continued efforts to reduce their international operations this week by announcing a “preliminary” agreement to sell their sometimes troubled Italian business (BT Italia S.p.A) to Retelit for an undisclosed sum.

The UK government has today confirmed its intent to ban SIM Farms (both possession and supply) some 6 months after the new Crime and Policing Bill (CPB) receives Royal Assent. The move is designed to better protect the public from fraudsters and scammers who also use the devices for criminal purposes (e.g. sending scam/spam messages and calls to mobile users).

Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks, which is perhaps best known for helping to build a number of open access UK mobile and fibre networks, has been picked by Kingston Council (Kingston upon Thames) in London to build a new 10km long fibre (broadband, Ethernet etc.) network in the royal borough. Virgin Media’s business division will also be involved.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today informed us that customers of their various Airtime plans can now take ‘Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’ for £14.99 per month and get a £1 airtime saving – offering access to hundreds of games with an annual saving of £12.

A new Censuswide survey conducted on behalf of UK broadband ISP Zen Internet, which involved 2,000 nationally representative UK consumers aged 16+ (surveyed during Q1 2025), claims to have found that 52% of Brits still have a landline, yet only 15% use it regularly. But only a third intend to take (or have already) the digital voice alternative when the switchover occurs.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 have this morning revealed new mobile, internet, and TV data showing a weekday afternoon surge in traffic after 3.40PM, as children across the UK reach for screens after school. This is largely driven by TV/streaming, YouTube and homework related activity.

Some customers of city-focused UK ISP Hyperoptic, which since 2011 claims to have deployed an alternative full fibre (FTTP/B) network to reach “more than” 1.73 million homes in parts of 64 towns and cities, appear to be suffering from a sizeable but partial network outage this morning.

The ability of a broadband provider to offer an effective and informative ‘Service Status‘ page, which can be useful for keeping customers updated about developments during network outages, is a crucial but often overlooked feature of modern internet provision. Yet in recent years’ ISPs seem to have been making them less and less effective or removing them entirely.

A new study from researchers at RemotePeople, which is an international remote recruitment agency, claims to have identified some of the sixty best and worst UK locations for working from home (WFH). One of the key metrics here is broadband speed (download and upload), which helped to lift Southampton into the top spot. But London ranked last.

The popular tool is currently still offline at the time of writing today and returns the following message on use: “Service request failed. Please try again later“.

Mobile infrastructure services provider Cornerstone (CTIL), which handles the UK network sharing agreement between O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone (Vantage Towers), has announced that Oxford will be the first of three major UK cities set for “enhanced [5G] mobile connectivity” in 2025 as they deploy a new “city-wide” small cell network.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has declined to uphold a complaint against one of CityFibre’s direct mailing adverts for their new UK FTTP broadband network. The complaint was lodged by the BT Group after they suggested it “misleadingly implied there was no existing full fibre broadband at the address.”
