Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) recently started emailing customers with handsets that are “not fully compatible with the UK’s 4G or 5G network” in order to notify them of their imminent 3G switch-off and offer an upgrade. But it’s worth noting that these notices will sometimes still get sent to people with technically compatible phones too, often leading to confusion.

ISPreview has spotted that the Government’s (DSIT) Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency have issued a contract modification notice for alternative network ISP GoFibre. This modestly expands their state aid funded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out of full fibre technology for hard-to-reach rural parts of Teesdale (Lot 4.01) in County Durham.

Alternative network and UK ISP Country Connect, which since 2021 has been deploying their new gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across harder to reach parts of South Wales (here) and some communities in England, recently passed the key milestone of having covered 10,000 premises RFS (up from 3,709 two years ago).

Customers of ASUS’ popular WiFi and broadband routers have been advised to ensure that they’re on the latest firmware (software update) after security researchers at GreyNoise published a new vulnerability, which has already allowed attackers to gain “unauthorized, persistent access” to thousands of devices exposed to the public internet.

A Japanese team has today set a new world record for long-distance high-capacity transmission in optical fibre communications, which saw them achieve a data speed of 1.02Pbps (Petabits per second) over a distance of 1,808 km using a 19-core optical fibre cable with a standard 0.125mm cladding diameter.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today announced a new partnership with debt advice firm Money Wellness, which aims to improve the support they’re able to offer to “financially vulnerable customers” who many be experiencing financial difficulties.

A new Point Topic study of all major standalone and bundled fixed broadband operators and their tariffs across the EU, UK, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland – reflecting a total of 31 countries and 200 operators – has revealed that the United Kingdom ranked a respectable 12th in the table (median average tariffs) and 4th for entry level package tariffs.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT has joined the new UK Government backed Fair Payment Code (FPC) and, in the process, just became the largest information technology business to achieve a Silver Award under the scheme. The FPC is overseen by the Office of the Small Business Commissioner (OSBC).

A little over a month has passed since internet provider Lit Fibre, which harnesses CityFibre’s UK full fibre (FTTP) network (they originally ran their own fibre network – here), introduced a range of new “specialised” packages. But they’ve now significantly cut the prices of those same plans “due to market demand“.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has today shared the results from a recent survey they conducted, which examined the coverage and performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks – including EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2 – for people travelling on part of the Elizabeth Line (train) from Heathrow Airport (T 2/3) to Canary Wharf.

Network operator CityFibre, which have so far built their 2.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.4 million UK premises (4.2m Ready for Service), has today confirmed the completion of their “primary” £58 million build across the large Berkshire (England) town of Reading – including some of its surrounding areas.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has this morning revealed that a total of 50 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across England (9 masts), Wales (28) and Scotland (13) as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. But 50 more will follow by March 2026.

A few years have passed since the South Western Railway (SWR) announced that it would deploy a new rail-side 5G mast network (here), which aimed to deliver “superfast” onboard WiFi for people travelling on a 70km long stretch of their Main Line into London (between Basingstoke and Earlsfield). But after some delays, the new network is now live.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to grant SpaceX’s Starlink service “temporary authorisation” to harness the E band frequencies for their mega constellation of compact ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The move would expand their backhaul capacity at three gateway earth station sites within the UK.
