Abingdon-based alternative broadband provider Gigaclear, which has built their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 612,000 premises in rural parts of England and is home to c.160,000 customers, has this week slashed the price of their top 900Mbps (avg. speed) product from £39 a month to just £24 for new customers “until further notice“.

Aviva-backed alternative gigabit broadband operator Truespeed, which has rolled out their full fibre (FTTP) network across 177,000 premises (44k customers) in rural parts of South West England, has today confirmed that they’ve reached a major merger agreement with Freedom Fibre to consolidate their two networks.

The Government has managed to get some of the UK’s biggest broadband and phone providers, including BT, Virgin Media (O2), VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK), Sky (Sky Broadband) and TalkTalk, to sign-up to a new Telecoms Consumer Charter that pledges to “stop unexpected bill increases“. But sadly, it’s not an end to mid-contract prices hikes.

Communications and broadband provider BT Business has today announced that they’re working alongside global IT consultancy Avanade and Microsoft to launch a tailored AI training for all 11,000 of its employees, which they say aims to “radically transform how we work and to better serve our customers“. Cost-cutting probably has a role to play too, we’d imagine.

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has today announced that they will shortly be bringing together several of the most popular TV and movie streaming services – Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix and Hayu – into a single Sky TV subscription for UK customers to take.

The ITS Technology Group, which have deployed various open access and business-focused full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks across parts of the UK, has today announced that they’ve completed the rollout of their XGS-PON powered Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across Crawley (West Sussex), giving more than 1,500 organisations access to gigabit-capable broadband.

Alternative broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group), which has already expanded their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 3 million UK premises (here) and is close to signing a major consolidation agreement with either Virgin Media’s (nexfibre) parents or CityFibre (here), is understood to have held talks over redundancies with around 50 employees.

City-focused full fibre (FTTP/B) broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which claims to have deployed their gigabit speed network to cover 1.9 million UK homes, has recently and quietly added two new options to their existing social tariffs for those on state benefits (Fair Fibre Plans). The new options add symmetric speeds of 500Mbps and 1Gbps, making them among the fastest such tariffs on the whole market.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has today opened a call for evidence to support their new ‘Mobile Market Review‘, which aims to ensure that their policy and regulatory frameworks are updated to support investment, innovation, competition and consumers. The review could help to boost the rollout of fast 5G and future 6G mobile broadband networks.

Australian investment group Macquarie Asset Management has acquired Infracapital’s 50% stake in the Last Mile Infrastructure Group, which gives it 100% control of the multi-utility infrastructure group that designs, builds, owns and manages more than 930,000 “connections” across Great Britain (including electricity, gas, water, wastewater and fibre optic broadband etc.).

In a significant development, national broadband operator Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they’re replacing long-serving CEO, Clive Selley, with current Deputy CEO Katie Milligan from 1st April 2026. Clive will then will become CEO of BT International, where he succeeds Bas Burger who has decided to leave BT after 18 years of service on the same date.

The Scottish Government (SG) has officially relaunched their proposed gigabit broadband roll-out procurement for Fife, Perth and Kinross. The proposed contract is valued at £28,557,891 excluding VAT and aims to help expand such a network to cover an estimated total number of 17,830 premises in hard-to-reach areas (i.e. those not covered by any other gigabit networks).

A new report claims that Australian investment group Macquarie has hired business advisors at Perella Weinberg Partners (PWP) to prepare KCOM for sale in Q2 2026. The operator is the incumbent broadband and phone provider for Hull, although their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network also extends into other parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
