The EU has released data on retail prices for fixed broadband ISP services, which reveals a pattern of price reduction over the last three years for bundled offers. It also finds that price competition is mainly taking place in the market for download speeds of above 4Mbps (Megabits per second).

The latest research from consultancy firm Ventura Team and finance group Portland Advisors has estimated that at the current “snail’s pace” it could take Europe 92 years and £211bn to completely switch from existing copper-based telephone and broadband ISP infrastructure to a fully fibre optic (FTTH) service.

Ofcom UK has today proposed a new framework to support the future use of White Space (IEEE 802.22) based wireless broadband technology on a licence exempt basis. The new service harnesses unused radio spectrum, which exists between Digital TV channels (470MHz to 790MHz), to deliver wifi style connectivity over a wide area.

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) has officially started the formal tender process to appoint a commercial ISP partner for its Hampshire Broadband Programme, which is estimated to be worth close to £20m and will aim to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) speeds available to almost everybody by around the middle of 2016.

A new RootMetrics study of EE’s allegedly faster Mobile Broadband speeds has revealed that just 40.2% of its test locations had access to the 4G (1800MHz) network, yet speeds averaged 17Mbps (Megabits per second) in locations where it was available and 7.6Mbps when only 3G connectivity could be found.

The communications regulator has today revealed that 47% of UK internet users are unable to “confidently identify” whether the online content they download, stream or share is legal or not. Meanwhile some 16% of users aged 12+ said they had “accessed online content illegally” between May to July 2012.
