The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today issued radio spectrum licences to the five winners of their recent 4G auction for the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. The move means that BT, O2, Three UK, EE and Vodafone are now “free to deploy” related LTE superfast Mobile Broadband networks.

Analyst firm Musicmetric has published new data to show that court ordered website blocks (censorship) imposed by broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom against internet piracy websites (e.g. The Pirate Bay) have had “little impact” on “illegal” BitTorrent based file sharing (P2P) activity.

Mobile operator O2 UK (BE Broadband), which is owned by Spanish multinational Telefonica, has today confirmed that their struggling fixed line Home Broadband and Home Phone service is to be taken over by arch rival BSkyB (Sky Broadband) for a consideration of £180 million.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest telecoms complaints bulletin to January 2013. Overall complaint levels have fallen and saw a fairly typical Christmas dip in December, although worryingly the number of consumers complaining about how ISPs actually handle their gripes has continued to grow.

Market research firm NPD Group has reported in its Annual Music Study 2012 that the number of broadband ISP internet users using peer-to-peer (P2P) based file sharing services to “illegally” download music declined by 17% in 2012 to 21 million people (down from a peak of 33m in 2005).

Point Topic UK has published its latest Q4-2012 analysis of global standalone and bundled broadband tariffs, which found that residential consumers in Western Europe pay the lowest for cable broadband based ISP services. But consumers in the Asia-Pacific region still get the best deal for fibre optic (e.g. FTTH) and older DSL services.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) has suffered another painful quarter after their latest results for Q4-2012 showed that its fixed line home broadband subscriber base had fallen by -19,400 in the quarter to reach a new total of 560,100 customers. Meanwhile rumours of a sale to BSkyB continue to persist.

One For All, which produces TV related equipment, has announced the launch of two new indoor TV aerials that include a built-in 4G (LTE) filter that it claims will reduce interference from related Mobile Broadband signals in the 800MHz spectrum (due to roll-out around the UK from late spring 2013).

ISP Gigaclear has begun work to install its new 1000Mbps (1Gbps) capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network around the small rural civil parish hamlet of Frilford and Frilford Heath (eventually including Cothill) in Oxfordshire (England), which will be priced from £37 per month.

UK ISP BE Broadband (O2) has released a new beta firmware v10.2.2.9 for its Technicolor TG582n (BE Box v2) broadband router that adds a number of new features, including preliminary IPv6 support, greater access control over other network devices and automatic WiFi channel selection for an improved wireless signal.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national telecoms network, has announced that their recent technical trial of the forthcoming 220Mbps (20Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP product has gone without a hitch. The full pilot will now begin on 1st March 2013 as planned.

Mobile operator Vodafone has told this week’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona (Spain) that it will not return to offering a domestic focused fixed line home broadband product in the United Kingdom, although they will expand upon their broadband services for business clients.

The European Commission (EC) has today committed £43 million (€50m) to help research future 5G (5th Generation) based Mobile Broadband technologies for launch by 2020, which could one day deliver peak service speeds of up to 10Gbps or possibly even 100Gbps (Gigabits per second).
