Telecom giant Vodafone and strategic supplier Nokia have today revealed that they conducted their first real-world trial of “lag-busting” L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput) technology on a “live home broadband fibre [FTTP] connection“. The trial was able to significant reduce the delay (latency) time during gaming and videoconferencing by 94%.

The UK Government has today launched a new Innovation Cluster Map, which forms part of a fresh drive to encourage pensions firms to commit more of their private investment toward the country’s science and technology sectors, which could include anything from research into new vaccines and medicines to AI or future satellite broadband technologies etc.

Fibre optic network supplier Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre, cabling and ducted solutions, has today announced that they’ve “deepened” their existing partnership with altnet ISP Highland Broadband (formerly Lothian Broadband) to help accelerate their roll-out of full fibre (FTTP) infrastructure across Scotland’s rural communities.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced the deployment of a “first-of-its-kind” mobile Giga Site in Paddington (London), which utilises Nokia’s latest dual-band massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) tech to boost 5G mobile broadband performance and network capacity. The plan is to deploy 1,000 more of these during 2026.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) have today announced that they’re aiming to expand the population coverage of their latest 5G Standalone (5GSA) mobile network to reach 99% of the UK by the end of FY30. The move appears to be a reaction to VodafoneThree’s (Vodafone and Three UK) target (here) of achieving the same outcome by 2034.

A number of homes, businesses and several network operators, including Netomnia (Youfibre, Brsk) and Openreach (BT), were impacted yesterday outside the City of Durham after vandals gained access to a chamber and cut vital fibre optic cables; disrupting local broadband connectivity for a protracted period.

Mixed news for customers of Virgin Media’s broadband and pay TV services today. The provider has decided to follow BT’s (inc. Plusnet and EE) recent move (here) by increasing their existing mid-contract pricing policy to adopt an annual rise of £4 (monthly) each April (up from £3.50). But Netflix is now included in more of their broadband and TV bundles.

Mobile operator Lebara, which harnesses Vodafone UK’s mobile virtual network operator (mvno) platform, today finally confirmed to ISPreview that they had begun rolling out eSIM (Electronic SIM) support in a phased manner. But initially this will only be available to new customers joining with an Apple iPhone Air, although support will soon expand.

Glasgow-based full fibre broadband ISP Brillband, which was acquired by AllPoints Fibre Networks (APFN) back in October 2024 (here) and sells packages to homes over the same wholesale platform, has today announced that “every new Brillband customer” will receive their next-generation Wi-Fi 7 router as standard. No price hikes needed.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) and partner Freshwave have today revealed that they’ve expanded their 4G mobile (mobile broadband) network coverage in the centre of Perth (Scotland). This has been achieved via the deployment of six new 4G outdoor small cells.

The UK’s largest alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network, CityFibre, has today published their latest results and revealed that they now cover 4.6 million premises (4.3m RFS) and have seen record growth in customer connections, with 108,000 customers connected in Q3 2025 (up from 58k in Q2) to total 730,000.

Sister UK ISPs Brsk and YouFibre (Netomnia) will today launch special Black Friday pricing across their range of broadband packages. On top of that, Brsk also confirmed that their new WiFi 7 routers will, from today (1st Oct 2025), be included as standard for all new customer orders (YouFibre did the same in August – here).

The popular online image sharing website Imgur.com, which was first founded in 2009 and has been widely used to host viral images, short videos and memes that can be linked to from other sites, appears as if it may have responded to a recent Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) investigation by blocking UK IP (Internet Protocol) addresses.

Hampshire-based alternative network operator and UK ISP toob, which has built a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across parts of South England and also harnesses CityFibre’s network in other areas, has this morning announced that they’ve just added 33 new towns and cities (1.1 million additional premises) to their coverage via CityFibre.

The IOEMA Fibre project, which was first announced last year (here) and now plans to build a 1,600km long repeatered subsea fibre optic cable between the UK and several neighbouring countries, has revealed that its seventh landing point in Northern Europe – Scheveningen (Netherlands) – has now been confirmed and is to be delivered by Greenhouse Datacenters.
