At present Openreach (BT) already provides their Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to UK new build home developments of 30+ plots for free, while smaller builds could only get a discount. The good news is that they’ve today extended this free build offer to new sites of just 20+ plots.

The UK broadband ISP and phone division of the Post Office has today been fined £175,000 after the national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, found that they had overcharged customers, specifically those people with hearing or speech impairments who made telephone calls using a relay service.

Buckinghamshire-based UK business ISP MLL Telecom has announced that their long standing CEO, Gary Marven, is to retire after 10 years in the job and hand over to new boss Shaun Ledgerwood. Gary will however remain a Director of the business.

Mobile operators EE and Vodafone have today come top in umlaut‘s (formerly P3) annual 2019 UK Mobile Network Test, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 3G and 4G (voice and data / broadband) services across 21 cities, 29 towns and along 10,700km of major roads.

Once again the National Farmers Union has published the results from its annual online and telephone based survey of several hundred members, which found that just 17% of farmers had access to “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 16% last year and 4% in 2015) and 15% have no indoor mobile signal at all.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) appears to have added 7 new UK locations to their roll-out plan for Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which largely reflects the outcome from a recent consolidation of smaller builds in to fewer, but larger, build areas.

Rural UK ISP Airband has today unveiled a new mission statement to mark their 10th anniversary, which says: “Transforming Connectivity for people and communities who deserve better.” Apparently this will underpin the firm’s aim of growing their position as a provider for “under-served communities and demand-led projects.”

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their new ultrafast 5G data (mobile broadband) network has now gone live in busy areas around the cities of Belfast, Edinburgh and Leeds, as well as the towns of Cheadle, Rochdale and Stockport around Greater Manchester. There’s also an update on 5G roaming and MORAN technology.

Fixed wireless ISP Symmetris Broadband, which has built a number of networks across rural parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, appears to have just completed the build of their very first 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in the small neighbouring villages of Pedham and Hemblington.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has given its approval to the selection of a preferred bidder (due to be named within the next few weeks) to deliver on their Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) project, which originally aimed to deploy a 450km long Gigabit speed fibre network to serve 1,300 public sector sites.

The Local Government Association, which represents hundreds of councils across England and Wales, has finally figured out what almost everybody else has known for years, that those mobile network coverage (3G, 4G, 5G etc.) checkers – usually run by operators – are not a particularly reliable gauge of signal quality.

A new London-based “full fibre” network builder called People’s Fibre has just entered the market, which is promising to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network “across the UK,” albeit focusing upon areas where such networks are currently non-existent or poor.

The Scottish Government‘s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has today issued an update on the progress of their much delayed £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which confirms how many premises will benefit in each area and what technologies will be used. Sadly the rollout will complete in 2023, rather than 2021.

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which last year started the £85m+ roll-out of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Northern Ireland (here) and has also been linked to Project Stratum (here), has today unveiled the next batch of areas in County Down to benefit from their infrastructure.

Cable and fibre optic ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has just completed another build of their 516Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and TV network in County Durham, which has just gone live for 4,500 homes in the Sunderland town of Houghton-le-Spring, including the surrounding areas of Shiney Row and Penshaw.
