The Portsmouth City Council, which last year awarded Cityfibre the £3.8m Local Full Fibre Network contract to rollout a new “gigabit-capable” Ethernet and broadband network to 200 public sector sites (here), has confirmed that UK biz ISP MLL Telecom have been chosen to provide services on the related Solent Network framework.

Infrastructure firm Magdalene (part of M Group Services) has signed a new 5 year deal to help develop and upgrade 4G / 5G mobile sites (e.g. Masts) for Mobile Broadband Network Ltd (MBNL), which is the Joint Venture between Three UK and EE (BT) that is responsible for the management and deployment of their shared sites.

Earlier today UK ISP KCOM unveiled Phase One of a new £100m project to extend the coverage of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into new parts of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire (here). Now the provider’s MD, Sean Royce, has revealed details of its initial rollout areas and other plans for 2020.

A new Censuswide survey of 1,001 SME (business) employees, which was commissioned by broadband ISP Zen Internet, has claimed that poor internet connectivity, coupled with technology issues, could be contributing to the United Kingdom’s current slump in productivity.

The Suffolk County Council (SCC) appear set to appointed a supplier for their new £10m+ state aid fuelled Phase 3 Superfast Broadband contract, which could see 7,000 additional premises (mostly in rural areas) being reached by faster UK ISP networks; most likely via “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a “misleading” advert by campaign group Electrosensitivity-UK after it wrongfully claimed that the roll-out of ultrafast 5G mobile networks could result in a range of health effects, such as “reduced male fertility, depression, disturbed sleep and headaches, as well as cancer.”

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today launched their first combined Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26 (FTMR), which proposes major changes to help boost investment in “full fibre” broadband and high capacity Ethernet (leased line) services for both the residential and business connectivity markets.

The incumbent broadband ISP for East Yorkshire and Hull, KCOM, has today announced the “first phase” of a major new £100m project to expand the coverage of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service beyond their current network area, which will initially reach new parts of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Openreach has unveiled some new special offers to help ISPs facilitate their analogue telephone (WLR) to digital voice (VoIP), and copper to “full fibre” (FTTP), Exchange Upgrade trials (here, here and here) in Mildenhall (Suffolk) and Salisbury (Wiltshire) respectively.

ITS, which runs 24 alternative full fibre and hybrid (wireless and fibre) networks across the United Kingdom (current contracts enable access to over 70,000 premises), has today announced a new £45m deal with Aviva Investors to help “fast track” its plans to build new “full fibre” data and broadband ISP networks.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has begun its campaign to nudge broadband and telecoms regulators from across the world to support their efforts to approve the 6GHz band for use alongside WiFi networks, which could in theory be introduced into the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard alongside the Wi-Fi 6E terminology.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has this morning announced that all customers still stuck on one of their slower superfast broadband packages (e.g. 50Mbps) – equating to over 1 million subscribers – are to be upgraded to “ultrafast” download speeds of 108Mbps (10Mbps upload) for FREE.

The latest independent model has estimated that the H2 coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom has risen to 96.45% (up from 96.1% in H1), while “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 11.01% of premises (up from 8.13%) and 59.30% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 57.5%).

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has today announced the launch of their first “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) class package, which is based off Openreach’s (BT) rapidly growing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. Until now they only offered FTTP via the slower “superfast” tiers (max speeds of 40Mbps or 80Mbps).

Customers of Sky (Sky TV and Sky Broadband) may be pleased to learn that the Comcast owned broadcaster and ISP intends to hire more engineering, customer support and TV content creator staff in 2020, which could see their headcount increase again by around 3,000 jobs (making for a total of over 30,000 employees).
