Out-of-contract customers with budget ISP TalkTalk, specifically those who take either their “Fast Broadband” (ADSL) or “Faster Fibre” (FTTC / VDSL2) and phone line packages, have been told by the provider that their post contract prices will be hiked by up to £3 extra per month.

UK ISP BT has today effectively extended the “speed guarantee” on their ultrafast broadband (FTTP and G.fast) packages to the rest of their slower ADSL and FTTC (VDSL2) based services. The new “Stay Fast Guarantee” will see them trying to correct a fault with speeds and then giving £20 back (up to 4 times a year) if they fail.

BT has once again called upon local communities from across England and Wales to help adopt one of their old public phone boxes, many of which are now standing disused, for just £1 in order to “turn them into something inspirational” for their local area (i.e. a change of use from being adopted as a public toilet by revellers).

Ofcom has published a Spring 2019 update to last year’s Connected Nations 2018 report, which uses more recent data to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. The key change is that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 7% (i.e. over 300K premises in the last 4 months, nearly 1.8 million total).

Business ISP Exascale has announced that “unprecedented demand” during Q1 2019 has caused them to extend their carrier grade MPLS network to Wolverhampton and Telford, which they say will support a range of “competitively priced” uncontented gigabit Point-to-Point Ethernet and contended FTTP services in selected areas.

The Internet Telephony Services Providers Association, which represents the United Kingdom’s Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) phone industry, has today unveiled the winners of this year’s 2019 ITSPA Awards event. The awards were presented across 12 categories at Glaziers Hall in central London.

The Government has today launched a new consultation on their proposal to introduce new laws that would seek to improve the security of internet connected devices, such as smart TVs, broadband ISP routers, smart speakers and other Internet of Things (IoT) style devices. Mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a new range of “Smart” 4G plans for Pay Monthly customers that come with the UK’s first “swappable benefits” (comprised of the Video Pass, Music Pass, access to the BT Sport app and Extended roaming), as well as the first “lifetime smartphone warranty” from a network.

A complaint by JT (Jersey Telecom) has prompted the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban a “misleading” Facebook and website advert for mobile operator Sure, which claimed to be both “Jersey’s fastest mobile network” (mobile broadband) and also “officially the fastest in the Channel Islands.”

Some 60,000 homes and businesses across the city of Cambridge (Cambridgeshire, England) look set to benefit after Cityfibre announced the start of their £20m 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband roll-out, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone and is due to complete by the end of 2021.

Business and consumer ISP Cerberus Networks has today become one of the very few UK internet providers to launch both a 500Mbps and 1Gbps broadband tier using Openreach’s (BT) premium Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products. On top of that they’ve also reduced the price of their hybrid fibre G.fast packages.

The Government’s Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock MP, has today announced his intention to upgrade the National Health Service (NHS) with better digital connectivity, not least by ensuring that all GPs and Hospitals are connected to Gigabit capable “full fibre” connections (FTTP or leased lines).

Fibre optic comms provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms has been chosen by Jisc to launch the Janet South network. The rollout will see 7 more BT exchanges unbundled and will utilise 4 existing Points of Presence (PoPs) to provide improved connectivity to 11 UK universities and 80 local colleges.

Consumer magazine Which? has used data from its consumer speedtests to warn that just 13 constituencies in Scotland (unclear if they mean burgh or county constituencies) are achieving a broadband speed of over 20Mbps and half of tests across the UK failed to hit 10Mbps. But this interpretation has some big flaws.

Ofcom has today published their 2019 survey of UK service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest broadband ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (79%) and Tesco Mobile did the same for mobile (90%).
