Is it or isn’t it still alive? The State Opening of Parliament took place this morning and everybody was watching to, among other things, see if the UK government’s hugely controversial internet snooping legislation (Communications Data Bill) was still alive. The result.. confusion.

The latest quarterly results from O2 UK (BE Broadband) appear to suggest that the ISPs fixed line home broadband customers have been climbing over themselves to escape the forthcoming migration to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) as subscriber figures fell by a staggering -40,700 in Q1-2013 to total 519,400.

A complaint from Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has prompted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban a national press advert for TalkTalk’s triple-play Plus TV bundle of unlimited broadband, phone and TV services after it misleadingly claimed to be “Britain’s best value” package.

National UK telecoms operator BT has said that they “completely refute the basis” of a controversial new TalkTalk commissioned study into its superfast broadband charges as bearing “little resemblance to the actual costs incurred“.

BTOpenreach has this week dispatched one of its survey teams to begin preliminary work on their previously announced £3.7m project to divert two unused submarine fibre optic cables to the Isles of Scilly (here), which will support the rollout of superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) ISP products on the islands.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest Telecoms Market Data Tables Q4 2012 update and confirmed that the United Kingdom is now home to 22,174,000 21,680,000 fixed line broadband ISP connections (excluding corporate lines), which is up sharply by +659,000 +356,00 in the quarter.

BT Retail has today unveiled a new Hub 4 wireless broadband router, which will be rolled out to replace its existing HomeHub3 kit from 10th May 2013. Key highlights of the new device are its concurrent dual band wi-fi wireless (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and upgraded Smart Wireless technology, which should improve performance.

A leaked TalkTalk commissioned report from German analyst Wik Consult has predicted that take-up of superfast broadband (FTTC / P) services on BT’s (Openreach) platform will reach a “maximum” of 65% of addressable customers by 2019 and Virgin Media will hit 100% in 2017. The latest monthly Broadband.co.uk survey of anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data for April 2013 has reported that the average download speed in the United Kingdom increased slightly from 18.831Mbps in March to 19.014Mbps now. The average upload speed also hit 3.068Mbps (up from 2.945Mbps).

Some 80,000 premises in Brighton (England) have joined at800.tv‘s (DMSL) trial to test whether or not the new generation of 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services in the 800MHz band will disrupt Digital Terrestrial TV (Freeview) services. But the new trial will be a little bit different.
