CityFibre UK has today confirmed that they will invest £45 million to deploy their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to be put “within reach of every home and business” in the two Bedfordshire (England) towns of Luton and Dunstable.

Cambridge-based company Stratospheric Platforms has announced the “world’s first” 5G (mobile broadband) transmission from Earth’s stratosphere, which at 45,000ft managed to maintain the signal for 5 hours and achieve a broadband download speed of 90Mbps to a retail Smartphone on the ground.

UK ISP Lit Fibre, which is deploying a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to reach 500,000 homes by 2026, has today started to go live with its first residents in the town of Sudbury, Suffolk. The move comes just over three months after the operator started building.

Openreach’s (BT) Fibre Community Partnership (FCP) scheme, which works with disadvantaged UK areas to help co-fund the deployment of new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, has been put on hold for new applications in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) due to “soaring demand“.

The Department for the Economy (DfE) in Northern Ireland has issued a brief progress update on their £197m state aid supported Project Stratum scheme, which is working with UK ISP Fibrus to spread a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across 85,000 premises in rural areas by March 2025.

The UK ISP has also frozen their prices.

Rural UK ISP Wildanet, which last year began the £50m rollout of a new gigabit-capable broadband (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) network in Cornwall (here), has today confirmed that they “have no plans to put our prices up” like many of the market’s largest providers (most of those recently hit consumers with huge price hikes).

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme have announced that UK ISP Airband has upgraded their Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) based “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network in remote rural parts of England’s Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, which should bring more capacity and reliability.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425-7070MHz) available to Shared Access Licences for low-power, indoor use. But the move raises questions over the future use of this band to help improve 5G and WiFi performance, which has not yet been ruled out.
