Ofcom has today set out the terms of reference for their future UK mobile strategy review, which will examine how the regulator can adjust their approach in order to improve 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) network connectivity for consumers and businesses over the next 5 to 10 years.

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Rural Business and the Rural Powerhouse, which is an informal cross-party group formed by UK MPs and members of the House of Lords, has begun a new inquiry that will explore whether the government has “given up” on bridging the digital divide (mobile and broadband connectivity).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today reported that mobile broadband (4G, 5G) usage related to internet video game traffic on their network has increased by 31% over the past six months, while the number of people enjoying mobile gaming also increase by 18% during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Telecoms giant BT, which is currently doing everything it can to fund Openreach’s planned £12bn rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband services to 20 million UK premises by the mid to late 2020s, has reportedly appointed investment bank Lazard and held tentative early talks with a view to selling their BTSport broadcasting biz.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the final results from their recent £1.38bn auction of 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz frequency bands, which includes a few key changes from last month’s principal stage. Better mobile broadband coverage and speeds are expected.

Network Rail, which is responsible for running Britain’s railways, has revealed they will auction off 10,000 miles worth of their old trackside cable network (much of this still runs off legacy copper lines and is in need of an upgrade). The £1bn auction could help to support the UK rollout of gigabit broadband and 5G mobile.

But initially only a very few Smartphones are supported.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has opened a new Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) focused Test and Integration Lab at its Newbury technology campus, which will help to support their future plans for a commercial rollout of the 4G and 5G mobile supporting technology in rural parts of England and Wales.

The Government has today begun a consultation on their proposed changes to Permitted Development (PD) rights for mobile infrastructure, which seeks to extend 5G and 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in rural areas of England via key changes (e.g. allowing taller masts of up to 30 metres and softening planning permission).

Mobile operator Vodafone and supply partner Ericsson have begun a new trial that uses aerial drones and Lidar-based 3D technology to speed up network planning and site upgrades for new 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks, such as by using them to conduct surveys of difficult to reach rural and city centre sites.

Senior Government MPs and Ofcom have backed a call by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for the development of future 6G based mobile broadband technologies to prioritise societal benefits, instead of the usual focus on delivering “ever higher data [speeds] and ever higher spectrum bands.”

The UK Competition and Markets Authority has today “provisionally” cleared the proposed £31bn (total enterprise value) mega merger between broadband provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) and mobile operator O2 (Telefonica), which will light the fuse on a major £10bn project to extend “full fibre” FTTP and 5G mobile services.

A new study has analysed 6,148 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans from across 230 countries in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which found that the United Kingdom has seen its position fall from 59th last year to 78th in 2021, with an average price of USD $1.42 per GB (up from $1.39).
