The Fastest 16 UK Cities for Mobile Broadband Speed in H2 2020

A new report from mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has used the data they gathered for their previous H2 2020 study (here) to rank 16 of the United Kingdom’s largest and fastest cities by their average (median) download speed on 4G and 5G networks. Liverpool came top with an aggregate speed of 43.6Mbps.

Six Westminster Street Markets Get Free Gigabit Speed Wi-Fi

Six street markets in the London borough of Westminster, including Church Street and Berwick Street among others, claim to have deployed a new “superfast” public WiFi network to help local traders, customers and visitors get online via a “gigabit-speed outdoor wireless” broadband connection.

EE Adds 35 New UK Locations to their Ultrafast 5G Mobile Cover

Mobile operator EE (BT) has confirmed that a further 35 towns and cities across the United Kingdom have started to go live on their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network, which brings the total location count to 160. Some of the biggest additions include York (Yorkshire), Dundee (Scotland) and Swansea (Wales).

A lot of UK people have tried tethering their Smartphone’s mobile broadband (4G, 5G) connection to a laptop by using the ‘Wi-Fi Hotspot‘ feature, but not everybody is aware that you can do the same thing by using a wired USB-C cable. Gigabit broadband ISP Virgin Media has reported a week of extreme variations in UK internet traffic, which saw both the lowest level of upstream traffic in 2021 occur on Tuesday and then, the very next day, one of the highest peaks in downstream traffic hit their network (thanks to another massive Call of Duty update).

Survey Claims UK Mobile Users Wasting 14GB of Data a Month

A new survey of 4,000 UK mobile phone users by consumer magazine Which? has claimed that consumers on SIM-Only plans and contracts are “wasting” an average of 14GB (GigaBytes) of mobile broadband data each month. In short, some people could save money by switching to a plan with a smaller allowance.

SIM Swap Causes Annoyance for UK ASDA Mobile Customers

Existing customers with the mobile division of supermarket giant ASDA have been told to request a new SIM card by the 15th September 2021, or risk being unable to use the service. The move follows a decision last year (here) to swap their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) supplier from EE (BT) to Vodafone.

Smarty UK Refresh 4G Mobile SIM Only Plans with More Data

Mobile operator Smarty has this week announced that they’ve refreshed their range of SIM-Only mobile plans by giving them all bigger data allowances (mobile broadband) and often for no extra cost. For example, their entry-level plan previously only included 1GB (GigaByte) of data for £6 per month, but you’ll now get 4GB for that.

Three UK Discounts Unlimited 4G and 5G Home Broadband Plans

Mobile operator Three UK today reports that they’ve “slashed” their 4G and 5G powered unlimited home broadband prices in order to help people who are stuck at home. Prices now start from as little as £17 per month for “superfast” 4G broadband, and £24 per month for “ultrafast” 5G – “with the average download speed of 100Mbps.”

Ofcom Unveils 2021 Changes to Boost UK Full Fibre Broadband UPDATE

Ofcom has today published the outcome of their Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26 (FTMR), which sets out how various changes (Dark Fibre Access, copper retirement, regulation that varies by geographic area etc.) will be used to boost UK investment in “full fibre” broadband and high capacity Ethernet services.

Preliminary Winners of Ofcom’s UK 5G Mobile Auction Revealed

Ofcom has today revealed the winners from the “principal stage” of their latest 5G focused mobile (mobile broadband) spectrum auction for the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz bands, which saw operators spend a total of £1.356 billion across the various bands and EE (BT) appears to have gobbled up the most (£452m).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that their auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands will begin this Friday (12th March). The move should ultimately help to improve the coverage and speed of 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

Survey Claims 54% of UK Mobile Users Suffer Signal Woes at Home

A new Opinium based survey from Uswitch.com, which questioned a “nationally representative” sample of 2,000 UK adults during February 2021, has found that 54.4% of respondents (equivalent to 29.5 million UK consumers) have suffered from some form of mobile signal “issue” at home, and it’s worse in rural areas.

New Toolkit to Aid Scotland’s Rollout of 5G Mobile Broadband

The Infralink programme, which is funded by The Scotland 5G Centre (i.e. it’s one of their key Wave 1 projects), has today launched a “game-changing” initiative that will pave the way for greater 4G and 5G mobile connectivity across Scotland by helping to “identify sites on public buildings for masts and antennae.”

DCMS Committee Demands Answers on UK Gigabit Broadband Target UPDATE

The Chair of the cross-party DCMS Select Committee, Julian Knight, has criticised the UK Government for having “failed to answer” a key question in their recent report, which called for a detailed plan to show how it would deliver on its revised-down target for “gigabit-capable broadband.” The committee is now seeking a fuller response.
