It’s that time of the year again. The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has revealed the winners of their 18th annual 2016 Internet industry awards, which among other things saw London wireless ISP Relish pick-up the winning spot for “Best Consumer Broadband” and Hyperoptic secure the “Best Superfast Broadband” gong.

The first half of 2016 has seen average broadband speeds rise as consumers increasingly switch to faster services, with Virgin Media delivering the fastest average broadband download speeds and Zen Internet coming top for uploads. Meanwhile EE remains the king for Mobile Broadband.

Once again the UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today revealed the shortlist of potential winners for their annual Internet Hero and Internet Villain awards. It’s perhaps no surprise to find that people like Donald Trump (US presidential candidate) are up for the villain gong.

A new study, which examined the environmental performance (i.e. corporate sustainability and environmental impact) of the world’s largest publicly-traded companies by market capitalisation, has ranked BT Group as the 3rd best in the world and Sky PLC (Sky Broadband) 8th from a total of 500 companies.

The national telecoms regulator has today produced an updated study of 4G based Mobile Broadband speeds in central London, which specifically looks at the performance impact of the latest Category 4 vs 6 (LTE-Advanced) networks. Once again EE wins the speed crown, but Vodafone are catching up.

Rochdale-based UK ISP Zen Internet has officially been named the ‘Best Telecoms Service Provider of the Year 2016’ as part of the tenth annual Which? Awards, which claims to recognise businesses that have achieved “positive change and deliver excellent products and service“.

The Internet Telephony Services Providers Association, which is a trade body for the United Kingdom’s VoIP industry, has today announced the winners of their 8th annual 2016 ITSPA Awards. This year saw Telappliant collect the gong for Best Consumer Provider.

A new study, which is based on data gathered via 508,637 consumer Internet speedtests conducted between 9th Aug 2015 and 8th Feb 2016, claims to have revealed both the fastest and slowest cities (biggest) in the United Kingdom for average broadband speeds. Middlesbrough takes the fastest crown (34.46Mbps), while Hull is named the slowest (12.42Mbps).

A joint study from Which? and OpenSignal has revealed that actual coverage of 4G (LTE) mobile in the United Kingdom is poor, although EE (BT) managed to deliver the best 4G reach and Three UK came top for Mobile Broadband speed. But GiffGaff is still the highest rated by consumers.

The telecoms regulator has released their latest complaints report to the end of 2015, which reveals what mobile, TV, phone and broadband providers in the United Kingdom attracted the most consumer complaints. EE topped the naughty list for broadband, while TalkTalk dominated for fixed line phone gripes.

The telecoms regulator has today published their re-jigged annual 2016 report into the Internet performance of the United Kingdom’s largest fixed line home broadband ISPs and their customers, which reveals that the average home download speed has jumped from 22.8Mbps last year to 28.9Mbps now. But the gap between rural and urban areas is still significant.

Consumer magazine Which? has this week published the outcome from their latest reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet and Utility Warehouse win the highest ratings. Unfortunately the same could not be said for TalkTalk, which had the lowest score by far.

RootMetrics have put together a general report of all their mobile network testing for the past few months and revealed their pick of the top 16 cities (Larger Urban Zones) in the UK for mobile network performance, which saw Manchester top the table and Hull hit bottom. But caveats remain.

The annual uSwitch Mobile Awards 2016, which took place this week at The Barbican venue in London, have crowned giffgaff as the “Best Network of the Year” after it won several categories. A number of other operators also picked up awards, although it wasn’t such a good night for the big boys.
