Back in 2022 we reported that budget UK broadband ISP TalkTalk was running a new trial (here), which gave “some” existing customers a free automatic upgrade to full fibre (FTTP) broadband – provided they were covered by the network and didn’t already have such a package. But fast-forward 13 months and this is no longer just a trial.

The Sheffield City Council (SCC) has ordered CityFibre to cease its roll-out of a new 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in part of the South Yorkshire (England) City, which occurred after its contractor breached a permit and allowed night works to continue on well past the 11pm limit.

Leicester-based broadband ISP Gigabit Networks, which previously focused on connecting premises across the Midlands of England via CityFibre’s full fibre network (they also work with FullFibre Limited), has today announced the expansion of their service availability to encompass CityFibre’s national footprint.

CityFibre has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve recently taken the decision to exit a number of UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband contracts with build partners for a variety of reasons. One of those is known to be the Kier Group, which held various contracts for places such as Weston-Super-Mare, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Worcester etc.

Inverness-based ISP BrawBand (HighNet), which currently sells home broadband services over CityFibre’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in cities such as Inverness, Glasgow, Renfrewshire and Edinburgh, has today announced that they plan to double the coverage of their service by adding several additional areas.

UK ISP Yayzi Broadband, which mainly sells packages via Cityfibre’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, has made a bold move today by scrapping their existing 150Mbps and 500Mbps packages in order to focus on a 1Gbps and new 2.5Gbps tier. But to compensate for this, they’ve introduced a huge price discount.

Network operator CityFibre has today announced that their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 3 million UK premises (up from 2.5m in January 2023) and 2.6 million of those are considered to be ‘Ready For Service’ (up from 2.2m), which means that residents can place an order with one of around 35-40 ISPs.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today launched a new home broadband Xtra bundle, which adds an Apple TV 4K box, a 24-month subscription to the Apple TV+ streaming service, as well as inclusive anytime landline calls – all for just £12 a month, saving customers over £200.

Grimsby-based civil engineering firm Telec Networks, which has been used by full fibre (FTTP) operators like CityFibre and County Broadband to help construct their networks across various parts of England (e.g. Suffolk, Lincolnshire and Norfolk etc.), has reportedly notified that it intends to appoint an administrator.

Network operator CityFibre has today announced that they’ve begun a £31.2m project to deploy their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband ISP network across the South Yorkshire town of Wath Upon Dearne, which is home to a local population of around 12,000. But it’ll go further than that.

The latest independent data from Thinkbroadband‘s database has revealed that alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP networks (AltNets) now cover over a quarter (25.14%) of the UK, which is up from 23.64% at the end of June 2023. In terms of the top 10 locations where such networks dominate, Peterborough (84%) comes first.

A few months ago we reported (here) on how residents in two Cheshire villages had been mistakenly been told by UK ISP TalkTalk that their full fibre (FTTP) broadband service – under the old UltraFibreOptic (UFO) platform – was about to be disconnected. But unfortunately, the provider seems not to have learnt its lesson.

A district councillor has claimed that CityFibre’s £50m project to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Norfolk city of Norwich, which began in September 2021 and was being supported by civil engineering contractor Telec Networks, could be at risk of a protracted suspension.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has started the procurement phase for the award of their first major Cross-Regional Supplier Framework (Type C) contract under the £5bn rural Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which could see a single network operator being picked to help cover some of the most challenging areas.
