Network operator CityFibre has today announced that their high-speed fibre optic based Ethernet (leased line) services are now available to over 260,000 UK businesses (up from 80,000). The expansion has been underpinned by its nationwide upgrade to 10Gbps capable XGS-PON (FTTP) broadband technology.

Network operator CityFibre, which has so far deployed their gigabit-capable full fibre broadband (FTTP) lines to cover 4.3 million UK premises (RFS), have said that recent newspaper “speculation” around the possibility of the business being acquired by Virgin Media (O2) are “unfounded“. The operator added that they were now close to securing a much-needed financing deal.

Network operator CityFibre, which has already deployed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network to cover 4.4 million UK premises (4.2m Ready for Service), has today taken the wraps off their new “Multi-Gig” product, offering its ISP partners symmetrical speeds of 5.5Gbps (Gigabits per second) – over twice as fast as their current top 2.5Gbps tier.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband, specifically those who have added the Wi-Fi Max service to their package (i.e. this includes their fastest WiFi Guarantee, advanced internet security, mobile data boost, requestable engineer visits and more), can now add a new “Device Priority” feature to this “at no extra cost” to help them take control of their WiFi experience.

A little over a month has passed since internet provider Lit Fibre, which harnesses CityFibre’s UK full fibre (FTTP) network (they originally ran their own fibre network – here), introduced a range of new “specialised” packages. But they’ve now significantly cut the prices of those same plans “due to market demand“.

In a major shift for one of the UK market’s largest retail ISPs, Sky Broadband has quietly begun introducing a new, albeit not currently cheaper, range of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages that harness CityFibre’s alternative national network. Previously, Sky only sold packages via Openreach’s network.

The Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Eastwood, Jackson Carlaw, has warned of “serious uncertainty” over the ability of some areas in the City of Glasgow, which have been held up for years by the owners of private roads, to be connected to CityFibre’s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) UK broadband ISP network.

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY25 financial results, which confirms that their fixed line broadband base grew by a healthy 61,000 in the last quarter to total 1.61 million customers (down from 72k added in Q3 2024). But their mobile base fell again to total 18.175m (down by -125k in Q4 vs -174k in Q3).

A new newspaper report claims that CityFibre is allegedly engaged in “discussions” with Fern Trading, a subsidiary of Octopus Investments, over the potential acquisition of the Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network built by All Points Fibre Networks (APFN) – itself reflecting an earlier consolidation of Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre and Giganet.

Rochdale-base UK ISP Zen Internet has today officially launched The Fibre Hub, which essentially aggregates access to a number of major and smaller alternative full fibre broadband networks (Openreach, CityFibre, Trooli, Freedom Fibre etc.) and offers that up to partners (e.g. other ISPs) at the wholesale level.

Network operator CityFibre, which recently appointed Censuswide to conduct a nationwide survey of UK farmers, has claimed that 8% of farms do not have any internet connectivity at all and yet almost two-thirds of farmers surveyed (60%) believe broadband is critical for day-to-day farming activities.
