A new Hampshire-based residential ISP called Onestream has recently launched into the UK market and in order to promote that fact they’re offering some aggressively priced standard (ADSL2+) and superfast (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband packages, which naturally all include phone line rental.

A Censuswide survey of 3,422 home broadband ISP users has found support for Cityfibre’s legal challenge of the current UK advertising rules, which they say “misleadingly” allows so-called hybrid fibre ISPs to promote their services as being “fibre optic” despite using slower metallic cables (e.g. copper).

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority has put £5.6m toward supporting the launch of their new ‘Delivering Digital Connectivity Strategy’, which aims to “significantly improve mobile, broadband and public WiFi coverage, whilst securing future proof full fibre [FTTP] and 5G networks.”

Residents of the Coleham district in the town of Shrewsbury (Shropshire, UK) have moaned after a new “fibre broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) street cabinet was removed by Openreach following complaints from the local Christian Science Society, which objected to the fact that it blocked the view of their sign.

Shropshire-based ISP Aquiss has complemented their existing 12 month contract terms by launching an optional 1 month term on their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC  / VDSL2) based unlimited superfast broadband packages and phone bundles, which offer average download speeds of 35Mbps and 67Mbps.

The state aid fuelled Connecting Cheshire project, which is working with Openreach (BT) to extend the local reach of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) ISP networks to an additional 100,000 premises by the end of 2018 (98% coverage), has announced that 95% of Cheshire East can now access “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has slashed the monthly price of their 63Mbps ‘Faster Fibre Large‘ (FTTC / VDSL2) unlimited superfast broadband and phone line rental package to just £25 per month for the first 18 months of service, which for the first time means they can match Vodafone. But it’s only available until 12th July 2018.

The Somerset County Council in England has published an update on their joint £171 million Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project, which reveals that around 11,300 premises in the county will remain unserved by “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks when the project completes in 2020.

The UK Minister of State for Digital, Margot James MP, yesterday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a Gigabit “full fibre” (FTTP) future and also called on ISPs to “pass on [the] benefit” from Ofcom’s recent wholesale market reviews in order to improve the take-up of “superfast broadband.”

Low cost UK ISP Plusnet has gone against the industry trend by testing a new range of broadband and phone bundles for one week, which are not only cheaper than usual but also come with free evening, weekend and mobile calls as standard. Previously providers have preferred to scrap their calling plans to focus on broadband.
