Internet provider Sky Broadband (Sky) has today launched a new entry-level “Sky Fibre” superfast broadband (i.e. up to 38Mbps FTTC) service, which forgoes the past focus on unlimited usage allowances in favour of a 25GB data cap and a lower standard price of £10 per month (note: their unlimited options cost from £20 per month, with 76Mbps pushing that to £30).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their annual 2014 Infrastructure Report and revealed that 75% of premises are now within reach of a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) connection (this falls to just 22% superfast coverage in rural areas or 33% for raw NGA reach), with take-up of related services hitting 22% (up from 16% last year).

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) has now given its final approval to the next generation G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband standard, which in a few short years could replace BTOpenreach’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps FTTC service and potentially deliver up to around ten times the speed using similar hybrid fibre lines (mixed fibre optic and shorter copper).

It’s been a long time coming but Rothbury councillor Steven Bridgett has today informed us that the Northumberland County Council in North East England has finally uploaded a much more detailed coverage map of their local £19m iNorthumberland project, which also depicts their tentative plans for ultrafast 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) coverage.

The £21m Superfast Worcestershire (England) scheme shows why councils might be nervous about revealing the take-up figures for their state aid supported roll-out of BT’s “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC/P) network. A Freedom of Information (FoI) request has revealed that the county’s uptake for related upgrades is just 3.2% and naturally political opponents have been quick to criticise.

The Northumberland (England) based market-town of Rothbury, including several surrounding communities, can now access faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services after a scheme funded by the Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF) and BT finally completed its planned deployment in the area.

The Managing Director of Andrews and Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has noted a number of interesting changes to the terms of BTWholesale’s up to 80Mbps “fibre broadband” Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL) connections, which appears to take away some of the ISPs flexibility and at the same time make it harder for consumers to get the connection speed they expected.

Competition between smaller alternative network ISPs is rare because they tend to keep out of each other’s way. But that’s not always the case and is proven by WarwickNet’s move to start rolling out a new fibre optic broadband network to businesses on Derby’s (East Midlands, England) Pride Park, which comes shortly after ITS Technology announced a new fixed wireless network for the same area.

In case you hadn’t realised it, the Black Friday Sales phenomenon has over the past few years been imported from the USA and is now hitting UK shores. Naturally ISPs are getting in on the action and so BT has put their Totally Unlimited Broadband (ADSL2+ and FTTC / BTInfinity) packages on a special discount.

Attempts to secure information about the take-up of BTOpenreach’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services and related claw-back provisions under the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme are often futile (we’ve tried asking BT, BDUK and many councils without success), yet a recent Freedom of Information (FoI) request has managed to secure related information.. albeit only for Wales.

After several years of waiting the first of 2,200 residents on the remote Isles of Scilly, which resides several miles off the south west coast of Cornwall in England, have begun to connect via BT’s new ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband service that is being supplied by a new submarine fibre optic cable back to the mainland.

20th November, 2014 (9 Comments)

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England, which was supposed to be rolling out BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to 90% of local premises by the end of October 2014 and possibly reaching 100% by the end of 2017, is apparently running “13 weeks behind schedule” and BT’s plan to deploy its new Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN) technology in the county may also have to wait another year.

18th November, 2014 (34 Comments)

Residents of Fowlmere, a village that’s home to around 1,200 people in southern Cambridgeshire (England), have vented anger at the local Connecting Cambridgeshire broadband project with BT after an “ugly” and “intrusive” new FTTC capable street cabinet was built to deliver superfast broadband into the community.

13th November, 2014 (6 Comments)

The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, which aims to make fixed line superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connections available to 95% of people in the United Kingdom by 2017, has now helped more than 1.5 million homes and businesses to gain access to the service (up by +500K since August 2014). Superfast connections can now allegedly be taken by 80% of the UK.

12th November, 2014 (52 Comments)

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again ruled that it’s perfectly fine for ISPs to describe hybrid-fibre broadband connections, such as those based off BT’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology, to describe such services as “fibre optic” even though they can also involve a significant amount of slower copper cable.

11th November, 2014 (11 Comments)

The Court of Appeal has this morning ruled that two patents owned by California-based ISP ASSIA, which relates to the field of Dynamic Spectrum Management, have been infringed upon by BT’s Next Generation Access (NGA) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / BTInfinity) superfast broadband technology.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has published their latest Q3-2014 (calendar) results, which saw broadband subscribers increase by +15,000 in the quarter to total 4,221,000 (up from +10k in Q2 and the same in Q1). Meanwhile the joint roll-out of their 1Gbps capable FTTP broadband network in York has finally started the build phase. A new Talk2Go app for iOS and Android is also out (i.e. mobile calls over a fixed line).
