Consumer website Expert Reviews has published the winners of their annual “Best Broadband Awards 2023” event, which has surveyed UK consumers in an effort to identify the best Internet Service Providers (ISP) across a range of categories. Much like last year, the overall winner was named as Plusnet, again.

Sky’s (Sky Broadband) ISP sibling for small business customers, Sky Connect, has today moved to keep up with competitors by launching a new WiFi 6 capable Hub (broadband router) and 4G Dongle (i.e. mobile data as an automatic backup) with new capabilities, such as better security and guest Wi-Fi.

Credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that ISP Sky Broadband’s annual UK price hikes (here) may also be followed by some changes that could degrade both the “Speed Guarantee” they attach to packages, and the WiFi guarantee that comes attached to their optional ‘Broadband Boost‘ add-on.

Customers of Sky Broadband’s (Sky plc) various UK broadband, phone and Pay TV products are being told to brace for an average annual price hike of 8.1% (£5.60), which is to be introduced from 1st April 2023. But crucially, this is less than the 14-15% of their main competitors and below the current level of inflation.

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has begun to rollout a new firmware update (aka – Entertainment OS 1.1) for the operating system software that underpins their broadband-based Sky Glass and Sky Stream TV services, which adds a number of new features (e.g. Personalised Playlists and enhanced Bluetooth features).

After sitting on the fence for a while, Sky Broadband has finally re-adopted Ofcom’s voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which among other things will require them to give customers more information about their estimated line speed and makes it easier to exit a contract penalty free (if faults cannot be fixed).

The latest Q3 2022 Ofcom survey of UK consumer complaints has, once again, named ISP Shell Energy as attracting the most consumer gripes for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while BT and Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media for Pay TV.

The Government has today confirmed that UK ISP Sky Broadband has officially become the first “national provider” to adopt a new system from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which allows them to verify – with a customers’ permission – that they are in receipt of key state benefits and therefore eligible for the social tariff.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband saw increased internet data consumption during the festive period this year, with data downloads on Christmas Day rising by 9.52% to 115PB (PetaBytes), which is up from 105PB last year. But bigger increases were reported across the rest of the festive season.

Customers of the Sky Mobile service, which is an O2 (VMO2) powered Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) with upwards of 3 million subscribers, has begun notifying their out-of-contract users (equating to around 1.3 million customers) that they will see their first price increase in 5 years on 14th February 2023.

A new survey of over 3,000 UK people has revealed that Virgin Media is the top broadband ISP and mobile operator for haggling, which reveals how much success consumers have had in getting a cheaper price from providers by negotiating with their retentions department.

It’s happened to a few people. You move into a new house and are told by your ISP that Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is available to the property, but soon after placing your order it becomes clear that some part of the network hasn’t been completed. Cue several months of waiting.

Customers who take UK ISP Sky Broadband’s cheaper “Basics” social tariff for home broadband and phone connectivity will now also gain the ability to add Sky’s new mobile social tariff, which will provide existing users with unlimited UK calls and texts and 3GB of data per month for 12 months “at no cost at all“.

Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has, over the past week or so, begun rolling out a new firmware update (QS013) for their broadband-based Sky Glass TV service and display, which fixes various bugs and also appears to improve image quality by enabling local area dimming on the screen.

A number of our readers have noticed that UK ISP Sky Broadband has, in the past week, removed their top 900Mbps (90Mbps upload) “Gigafast” package from sale to new customers, which was being sold over Openreach’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. Capacity issues could be the cause.
