The Go ON UK (RaceOnline 2012) initiative, which is headed up by the country’s Digital Champion, Martha Lane Fox, has joined forces with ISP TalkTalk and software giant Microsoft to offer a special refurbished computer (Windows 7 PC or Laptop) and broadband with phone bundle to low income adults and families from just £49.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk (AOL UK) has today released its latest results to 31st March 2012 (Q4), which saw their broadband subscriber base decline by -13,000 in the quarter to reach a new total of 4,066,000. That’s a significant improvement on the -43,000 lost during the previous Q4-2011. The ISP also revealed growth in its new superfast broadband service.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint by one of TalkTalk’s UK customers against a broadband speed checking facility on the ISPs website, which was found to deliver a “misleading” estimates of expected performance because it didn’t go far enough to make clear that the speed consumers received was “likely to be lower than the estimated” range.

Internet provider TalkTalk, which established itself in the UK market by offering extremely cheap home broadband services over their unbundled ADSL2+ (LLU) network, has called on Ofcom to develop a new regulatory framework that would effectively force BT to cut the wholesale / rental cost of superfast broadband services to ISPs from 2015.

Broadband provider TalkTalk UK appears to have revealed the first picture of its next generation ‘Plus‘ package router (Huawei HG533), which is specifically said to include support for their forthcoming YouView (IPTV) based TalkTalkTV service (due to launch sometime during “summer 2012“).

Global financial services firm Morgan Stanley has warned that UK ISP TalkTalk faces a near-term Margin Risk from the costs incurred as a result of funding development and launch of their forthcoming TV service, TalkTalkTV, which will be based off the subscription free YouView (IPTV) platform.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk UK has warned that up to 390 jobs could be cut as it moves to close a customer service/sales call centre in Northampton, while also restructuring another two in Preston and Warrington; but crucially some 450 new jobs will be created elsewhere.

The YouView (Project Canvas) IPTV system, a subscription free broadband internet based video-on-demand and catch-up TV service that will be used / bundled by a number of big ISPs (e.g. BT, TalkTalk etc.), looks increasingly likely to miss their launch window of “early 2012” and might not surface until sometime in Q3-2012.

Budget broadband and phone provider TalkTalk has announced on its Price Notifications page that the cost of standard phone line rental on its service will be hiked from £13.80 to £14.50 per month from 1st May 2012.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest quarterly customer complaints data (Q4-2011) for broadband and mobile telecoms providers (those with a market share of more than 4%). Unfortunately the data shows that TalkTalk remains the most complained about ISP and, after having improved in previous quarters, appears to have returned to its old ways with complaints on the rise.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk UK has become the first consumer ISP to announce the launch of its optional ‘up to’ 80Mbps Fibre Broadband Boost (20Mbps uploads) upgrade, which uses BT’s FTTC technology and is available for +£15 extra per month to the providers existing broadband subscribers (i.e. ‘Essentials’ and ‘Plus’ package customers).

Broadband ISPs BT and the TalkTalk Group have officially lost a second appeal against their demands for a Judicial Review (JR) of the controversial 2010 Digital Economy Act (DEA). The UK providers had claimed that significant chunks of the act, which seeks to identify, warn (letters) and possibly even disconnect (“suspend“) those suspected of “illegal” internet piracy (copyright infringement) from their ISP, were incompatible with EU law.
