Microsoft Windows and XBox Updates Bug Hits ISPs BT and TalkTalk

Since the end of January a large number of BT and some of TalkTalk’s UK broadband customers have found themselves unable to get software updates and patches for Microsoft’s XBox Live, Windows Updates and Windows Store services, which stems from a data corruption issue that also affected ISPs in other countries.

The latest quarterly results from TalkTalk to the end of 2018 (Q3 FY19) has seen the ISP add a further +44,000 on-net broadband customers to total 4,287,000 (up from the +24k added in the previous quarter), although sadly there’s not much of an update on their “FibreNation” FTTH deployment.

Ofcom’s newest Q3 2018 UK consumer complaints report has revealed that, for the first time, ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Sky Broadband won praise for seeing the fewest moans. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also covered.

Court Drops CEO Blackmail Charge Against TalkTalk Website Hacker

The Crown Prosecution Service has dropped a blackmail charge against Daniel Kelley (21) from South Wales, who back in 2016 pleaded guilty to 11 offences (including blackmail, computer hacking and fraud) related to the 2015 hack of TalkTalk’s broadband ISP website.

In response they’ve launched a new ‘Call Whisper’ feature that will warn customers about the potentially high costs.

Internet Movie and TV video streaming giant Netflix UK has recently published the latest update of their broadband ISP speed index, which reveals that cable operator Virgin Media is still the fastest provider for their service in 2018 and also going all the way back to 2014. Consumer magazine Which? has surveyed 3,000 of its UK members and concluded that broadband ISP customers who remain with their provider, and don’t haggle for a better price (i.e. after their minimum contract term has ended), are being hit with so-called “loyalty penalties” of up to £220 a year on average.

Internet speed analyst firm SamKnows has this week posted the results from a limited run of their new “sensationally accurate” broadband ISP speedtest tool, which was tested last month as part of support for some research that the BBC’s Watchdog TV show was doing. Unsurprisingly Virgin Media came top, with TalkTalk bottom.

The latest trading update from TalkTalk has revealed that the ISP increased their on-net broadband customers to total 4,243,000, which is up by +24K during quarter to the end of Sept 2018 (vs +80k in the previous quarter). On top of that they’ve unveiled the “FibreNation” roll-out plan for their “full fibre” (FTTH) network.

Two Hackers Jailed for 2015 Cyber Attack Against UK ISP TalkTalk

The Old Bailey criminal court in London has today jailed two hackers – Matthew Hanley (23) and Connor Allsopp (21) – for their part in the 2015 cyber-attack against TalkTalk’s website. This ultimately cost the broadband ISP around £77 million and exposed the personal data of 156,959 customers.

A new survey by consumer magazine Which? has named the best and worst rated 12 home broadband ISPs for customer satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet (86%) come top and Sky Broadband (47%) fall to the bottom. But the survey also warned that many people are paying over the odds by choosing to remain loyal.
