The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has rejected an attempt by Virgin Media to have rival Sky Broadband’s claim of offering a “totally unlimited broadband” package banned from its TV, press and website promotions. Meanwhile Sky succeeded in having several adverts for Virgin’s TiVo service banned.

Cable operator Virgin Media has revealed that its national UK telecoms network, which is home to 4.4 Million residential broadband ISP subscribers, carried a daily average of 4.2 Petabytes of data during Q1-2012 (4.2 million billion bytes). The volume of data consumption has thus increased by nearly a third in the 6 months from Q3 2011.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today confirmed that 41 London underground tube stations have been connected to its free public wireless internet access (WiFi) service, which will rise to 82 before the end of July 2012 and 120 before the end of this year.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today given UK ISPs three months to adapt after a revised ruling against Virgin Media banned the provider, and all others, from separating out the cost of compulsory phone line rental in their broadband bundles.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest quarterly customer complaints data (Q1-2012) for big fixed line broadband and mobile providers (i.e. those with a market share of 4%+). Sadly TalkTalk remains the ISP with most complaints but crucially they have continued to improve.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned two online adverts for Virgin Media’s broadband service after Sky Broadband (BSkyB) complained that VM “misleadingly” used sporting icon Usain Bolt to promise that the ISP would be “doubling everyone’s broadband speeds” when in reality some customers did not benefit.

The Executive Director of broadband at cable operator Virgin Media, Jon James, has suggested that the chances of a Net Neutrality (the principal of treating all internet traffic as equal) battle between access and content providers happening in the UK will remain remote so long as “intense competition” exists between ISPs.

A German cable operator, Kabel Deutschland (KD), claims to have become the “first” in the world to “successfully achieve” a broadband download speed of 4700Mbps (Megabits per second) during one of their real world field tests (more bandwidth than many current PC and laptops could process).

Cable giant Virgin Media has blamed a Spotify access problem on peak-time congestion that occurs between the ISPs network and the music streaming services data centre. The situation, which dragged on for the best part of two weeks, made the Spotify service effectively unusable for many of Virgin’s superfast broadband customers.

The Managing Director (MD) of UK business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has accused the Chief Operating Officer of Virgin Media, Andrew Barron, of being almost hypocritical for claiming that BT are monopolising superfast broadband. “It’s rich that a company like Virgin, who offers no wholesale access to its residential network, is making such an issue,” said Piers.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of cable and broadband giant Virgin Media, Andrew Barron, will today tell the House of Lords Select Committee Inquiry into the UK’s national superfast broadband strategy that BT are effectively being subsidised by government policy and thus “freezing out new entrants” from the market.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a technology magazine advert for Virgin Media’s 50Mbps superfast broadband service after BT complained that its claim to offer the “UK’s fastest broadband” was misleading. Several other ads were also banned because they failed to include the cost of Virgin’s Phone Line service.

The website of UK cable operator Virgin Media looks to have been targeted by the Anonymous activist group, which has launched a serious Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack against the provider. The move is believed to be in retaliation after the ISP responded to a court order (here) that required it to block broadband customers from accessing The Pirate Bay piracy site.
