In a surprise move cable operator Virgin Media has announced that they’re culling their online Cloud storage, Webspace and SmartCall services from 28th April 2016. The loss of Virgin’s Cloud and SmartCall will come as a particular shock since they’ve only been available for the past 2-3 years.

Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media in the United Kingdom, has today confirmed that they’ve started the roll-out of a new cable broadband router (SuperHub 3), which can also act as a VoIP based telephone gateway, to their European and UK operators.

Customers of BT’s consumer broadband service should avoid using the ISPs Home Hub routers for business style VoIP phone setups because of a seemingly deliberate built-in weakness that, no matter what security settings you choose on the hub, it will always leave port 5060 open.

This year saw Orbtalk collect the gong for Best Consumer Provider, even though their website appears more business focused.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that the commercial launch of their new Wi-Fi Calling service and separate Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, which allows their new 4G network to carry “crystal clear” voice calls, should both be deployed this coming summer.

Customers of TalkTalk’s home broadband service can now download a new Talk2Go app for Android and iOS (iPhone etc.), which allows them to make and receive calls (i.e. using their landline minutes) whilst out and about on 3G or 4G based mobile broadband or over Wi-Fi connections (charged at the same rate as if they were at home).

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has published their latest Q3-2014 (calendar) results, which saw broadband subscribers increase by +15,000 in the quarter to total 4,221,000 (up from +10k in Q2 and the same in Q1). Meanwhile the joint roll-out of their 1Gbps capable FTTP broadband network in York has finally started the build phase. A new Talk2Go app for iOS and Android is also out (i.e. mobile calls over a fixed line).

Telecoms provider New Call Telecom, which also owns UK Internet and phone provider Fuel Broadband (formerly Primus Saver), has splashed out around £108 million ($175m) to acquire a 70% stake in India-based Nimbuzz, a free VoIP calls and instant messaging app for use on both desktop computers and mobile devices.

BT Retail has today announced the launch of its new SmartTalk (BTSmartTalk) app for Apple iPhone and Android mobiles. The app requires a wifi or Mobile Broadband connection and enables customers to make phone calls via their smartphone and have them billed under their existing home phone plan (whether in the UK or abroad).

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced customer trials of its new SmartCall service, which allows UK Smartphone users with a Virgin Phone Line to use the unlimited calls from their home phone talk plan on their mobile. But you’ll need to have a wireless internet (wifi) connection to make it work.
