Customers and visitors to the websites of both Zen Internet and TalkTalk are being greeted by messages of unavailability after unspecified problems hit their web platforms, which can also hamper access important services (e.g. webmail, online account management). Well it wouldn’t be the first time.

Broadband and communications provider Zen Internet has become the latest ISP to suffer a serious problem with their website and some related online services, which appears to have started on Saturday afternoon (before 2pm) and is still on-going this morning now fixed.

Last month BTOpenreach began inviting ISPs to join the first large-scale customer trial of next generation 500Mbps capable G.fast and 1Gbps FTTP-on-Demand broadband technology, which is starting this month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire). Zen Internet has now become the first to confirm their participation (8 ISPs are involved).

Rochdale ISP Zen Internet has announced that their previously limited trial of Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6), which is designed to replace the old IPv4 Internet addressing standard, is now being opened up to all of their 95,000 or so broadband subscribers.

UK ISP Zen Internet, which is now home to 430 staff, has revealed that their operating profits surged 34% from £760,000 to £1.02m in the year to the end of September 2014 and revenues rose 6.8% from £47.36m (2013) to £50.62m. But there were also a few blips for the accounts department to tackle.

Unfortunately it’s bad news for BT and TalkTalk, which both ranked the lowest with just a single star out of five for satisfaction. Meanwhile Zen Internet did well to come top with five starts.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of their latest Q1 2015 reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which found that customers of John Lewis’s broadband division and Zen Internet were the most satisfied with their service. Meanwhile all of the biggest ISPs could be found languishing at the bottom.

New customers who take one of Zen Internet’s superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages (e.g. Fibre 1, Unlimited Fibre 1, Unlimited Fibre 2 or Unlimited Fibre Office) can now also take a Self-Install (Plug’n’Play) option, which means that an Openreach engineer doesn’t need to enter your home in order to complete the setup.

ISPreview.co.uk takes a look back at how the top fastest and largest national Mobile Broadband (3G/4G) and Home Broadband providers have performed over the last quarter. Overall Virgin Media still tops the fixed line table with an average Internet download speed of 53.20Mbps (unchanged from Q3 2014), while Vodafone delivered the best mobile performance at 13.78Mbps.
