This is a hardware networking peripheral/device that allows an Internet connection to be split between several computers. Modern consumer broadband routers typically combine the features of a HUB, SWITCH and MODEM into a single "all purpose" device that is capable of handling your Internet access connection with minimal interference from you.
Most Routers come from ISP's in a pre-configured state and as such they are practically 'plug and play' devices, requiring only basic instruction to get up and running online. Routers will often include lots of extra features, such as wireless (Wi-Fi) networking, firewalls, anti-virus monitors, extra ethernet/local network ports and more.
