Residents and business in the Darlington (County Durham) region look set to benefit from wireless broadband thanks to a new partnership between Balfour Webnet Limited (BWL) and Darlington Football Club:
Jon Sotnick, chief executive of Darlington Football Club said: The Quaker Broadband trial will be piloted within weeks offering up to 20mg unlimited download.
This partnership will have a huge impact on the local community, which the football club is proud to be at the heart of. Schools and hospitals will receive heavily subsidised or even free services. The advantages for both the town and the football club are huge and we are extremely fortunate to be at the forefront of this new technology.
Our stadium is now wireless enabled and this will benefit both fans and the club. It will help us implement a customer relationship management programme second to none and the Football League is monitoring our pilot very closely with a view to implementing this at other grounds.
The deal itself will facilitate installation of a WiMax based wireless broadband network that covers the whole town. In addition subscribers will soon be able to make free mobile calls from Darlington using the same network:
Ken Little, chief executive of Balfour Webnet said: To begin with we will be offering affordable basic broadband voice and data services in the Darlington area, hopefully from the end of October. However, this wireless technology has valuable spin-offs, with wireless surveillance products for home and community safety.
BWL has also deployed wireless technology throughout the Darlington Arena and will be trialling in 2008 a host of services such as real-time betting and entertainment. It's understood that financially disadvantaged groups should also benefit from cheaper subsidised Internet access rates.
We assume that by "20mg" they really mean "20Mbps" (Megabits Per Second), although it's unclear whether this will be symmetrical (same speed both ways) or not.
