Juniper Research has predicted that 24m subscribers will be using 3G LTE (Long Term Evolution) Mobile Broadband technology by 2012.
LTE is widely regarded as the next evolution up from present HSPA 3G technology, which can theoretically deliver speeds of up to 14Mbps over existing 3G mobile phone networks. So what will LTE bring to the table?:
- Downlink peak data rates up to 100 Mbps with 20 MHz bandwidth
- Uplink peak data rates up to 50 Mbps with 20 MHz bandwidth
- Operation in both TDD and FDD modes
- Increased spectral efficiency over Release 6 HSPA by a factor of two to four
- Reduced latency
However until then the current crop of HSPA technologies is expected to dominate with 70% of the total Mobile Broadband subscriber base under its wing. Mobile
WiMAX is also expected to grab a single digit stake.
Its interesting to think that such services could exist and function before BT has managed to completely rollout a competitive fixed-line solution.
