The latest research from uSwitch.com has revealed that 39% of broadband users are confused by the term IPTV (Internet TV), while 34% get confused with
VoIP (Voice-over-Internet). Happily for ISP's, 74% of people were baffled by the term "MAC code" (used for migrating between ADSL ISP's):
Surprisingly, Silver surfers have a high level of knowledge - the over 50s have a greater awareness of IPTV than the 18 29 age group, the survey found.
Three quarters (75%) of Londoners knew what WiFi was, compared to 34% of people in the Midlands and Wales, although some respondents thought WiFi was a stereo system.
Nearly one in three Internet users (30%) were unsure what a podcast is, with some people thinking it is a UK fishing competition. In addition, a third of those questioned dont know whether their connection is ADSL or cable. Overall, uSwitch said the terms ADSL, MAC Code and VOIP generate the most confusion. The research isn't terribly surprising and we wouldn't expect ordinary folk to understand what ADSL stands for because it isn't necessary to know.
However, being able to identify what a 'Migration Code' (MAC) is somewhat different because such knowledge is empowerment. The ability to understand its relevance against your own ISP is a door to choice. More @ netimperative.com .
