Sky has been forced to suspend its broadband movie download service after a tool was released that circumvents the Digital Rights Management (DRM) encryption they use, thus making films sharable with others:
It follows news last month that a hacker had developed a tool called FairUse4WM that removes copyright protection from some Windows Media files.
Microsoft moved to fix the flaw in its digital rights management (DRM) technology that was exploited by FairUse4M, but the hacker has since developed a further way of cracking the copyright protection.
"We took this step as a precaution after Microsoft said it was working on an update to its Digital Rights Management software, which is used to protect movies on Sky by Broadband against unauthorised copying or distribution," Sky said in a statement to Web User. It's unclear when the service will resume.
