AOL has hinted that the review of its European business may seek to offload existing dialup subscribers, which have been a shrinking part of the ISP's customer base for several years:
"We believe we have a very good future and need to be on the web in Europe," Jonathan Miller, AOL's chief executive officer, told investors at the Deutsche Bank Media and Telecoms conference.
He added that the goal was to "extend our presence on the web in concert with any potential partners ... in that we may or may not stay in the (dial-up) access business."
Miller told investors at the conference that AOL was not seeking to sell all of its European internet businesses.Speculation had been rife that AOL would sell off some of its European (e.g. UK) ISP wings, yet the above statement would appear to sing a slightly different tune.
Quite how many providers would be interested in their dialup subscriber base remains to be seen, especially when those that remain appear reluctant to hook up with broadband. More @
