Despite the personal details of 100,000 customers having been stolen from
Bulldog (
here), the ISP has since revealed that just three people have confirmed being hit by the following and possibly related phone scam:
You may have seen the recent press coverage stating that in 2005, some
Bulldog customer contact details were illegally obtained by an unnamed third party.
To date three customers have been in contact as they have received unsolicited and possibly repeat telemarketing calls, potentially as a result of this. It's important to point out that none has involved any financial loss and we have no evidence that any customers have had their credit card details used illegally.
We take allegations of this nature extremely seriously and are already taking appropriate legal action against the third parties we believe may be responsible for this unauthorised use of our customer data.
Our priority is to ensure that we provide an excellent level of service to our customers. We are fully investigating this matter and have already taken steps to further improve our security procedures.
We believe any customers who signed up to the
Bulldog services after December 2005 are unaffected by this. If you have any concerns about this, please feel free to call us.
The good news has been tempered somewhat by customer anger over the length of time it took the provider to inform them of the breach. Indeed the above statement is the first many will have seen of the problem!
It's also unclear how
Bulldog can be so certain that only three customers were impacted, especially without people knowing the alleged company involved. Its hard to believe that somebody could steal 100,000 personal records and then proceed to only target three of them.
