ADSLGuide reports that BT is to extend its broadband reach into remote parts of Northern Ireland using '
Radio Broadband' (Wireless). Unrelated, the operator has also hooked up with Navini to begin trials of 'mobile' (phone) broadband based off WiMax (IEEE 802.16) technology:
For the tech junkies among us, they may want to visit www.sinet.bt.com and read SIN 438 which was issued in August 2005. This outlines the 5.8GHz radio broadband service that will be used in Northern Ireland, and provides the technical details of the service. The service will be based on kit that is as close to the 802.16 WiMAX standard as is currently possible with Alvarion kit.Presently the only two providers taking orders for the new N.I service are BT and UTV Internet.
The unrelated trial of mobile
WiMAX technology is expected to continue until mid-2006, although few concrete details are known.
