UK ISP Pipex has teamed up with Airspan Networks to launch a six month
WiMAX (802.16-2004) trial. This will be used to evaluate the delivery of broadband services using
WiMAX via Airspans products:
The trial will be conducted in the Midlands region of the UK and involve delivering PIPEX award winning home and business broadband services over Airspans WiMAX last mile access products. In addition to data services, the trial will also test VoIP services that would allow PIPEX to offer innovative product bundles.
Jonathan Paget, COO of Airspan Networks commented, We are very excited by this opportunity. Airspan is focusing on delivering a self-installable WiMAX solution that delivers VoIP and IP services to multiple end-user devices, including laptops and mobile handsets. This Voice-over-WiMAX and Voice-over-Wi-Fi-over-WiMAX test will allow us to fully evaluate our technology in a carrier network environment.
The technical tests will include a wide-ranging assessment of the acceptability of wireless broadband data and voice services by end-users, and a series of radio performance measurements designed to assess the long-term stability and availability of WIMAX. The trial will be based on Airspans indoor WiMAX modem, which will enable end-users to self-install their wireless broadband service. Future trial phases will assess the performance of other WiMAX device types, including laptop cards and handheld devices for both fixed and nomadic applications. We note that Telabria, Metranet and BT are in the process of testing broadband
WiMAX wireless services, with several other operators still mulling over the idea.
