BT has chosen voice and data communications provider Entanet, which also supplies several UK ISPs and business with broadband, as the only non-BT company to participate in the operators first 21CN broadband trial:
Commenting on the announcement, Entanets Chief Operations Officer James Blessing said: To be selected as one of the three trialists is very exciting news for us. Weve been extremely proactive in BTs 21CN industry working group consultations. This involvement will provide us with first hand experience of its implementation and testing as well as a significant insight into the networks performance from an end user experience perspective and will help us accelerate our own product development.
Prior to the announcement BT had only been testing with its own '
Wholesale' and '
Retail' divisions, marking a necessary shift in strategy to test technologies and impact with the wider market:
Steve Lalonde, Chief Technical Officer at Entanet, said: "Well be making financial, time and resource investments in our network to participate in the trial, which will give us a critical edge in planning ahead for our network as 21CN is rolled out. The experience and knowledge were going to gain is invaluable.
The trial will start on 1st November 2007 from one of BTs Birmingham exchanges before expanding to ten exchanges by January 2008, after which other CPs will be joining the trials. It is expected to mostly revolve around faster ADSL2+ services, which BT intends to introduce next year.
