Sierra Wireless has announced the introduction of a new Mobile Broadband (3G) USB adaptor, the AirCard® 880U and AirCard 881U. Both are designed to take advantage of modern HSDPA/HSUPA technology and can deliver speeds of up to 7.2Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream.
The news follows Vodafone's recent announcement of plans to introduce identically fast Mobile Broadband speeds over the coming months. It's worth pointing out that both Vodafone and O2 already use Sierra products:
For use in areas where HSUPA networks are not yet available, the AirCard 880U and 881U USB modems are fully compatible with HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS, and GSM network technologies on all frequencies currently used worldwide. The AirCard 880U is optimized for Europe and Asia, while the AirCard 881U is optimized for North America. To ensure there is always enough power support to handle peak or fringe area transmission requirements without compromising performance, the AirCard 880U and 881U USB modems also include an internal battery that supplements the power from the USB port when extra power is required.
Unsurprisingly no pricing details have been announced and we suspect that will be left up to operators, although such hardware usually sells at around £50 to £100.
