One of our readers (James) has informed us that satellite ISP AVC Broadband officially ceased its one-way (download only) service yesterday. The provider appears to have announced the move back in November 2006, yet some only found out about it yesterday as their connection was cut-off:
AVC Broadband One-way Services
AVC Broadband has for the past 4 years partnered with satellite provider SES-Astra to bring a one-way satellite broadband service to the UK. Unfortunately SES have advised us that they can no longer provide the transponder space needed to provide the satellite broadband service from the current orbital position. Regrettably, it has been concluded that AVC Broadband will cease to offer a one-way satellite service. The service will cease on 20th January 2007.
As from 1st November 2006 AVC Broadband will not be accepting new orders.
AVC Broadbands two-way satellite services remain unaffected.

Unfortunately satellite ISPs have been on a slow decline over the past few years, largely due to the overwhelming dominance of fixed-line alternatives. Sadly there are still people that live outside of this field and for them such services are often the only alternative.
