Last week it was reported that BT had been given the green light to shift 150 'BT Global Services' engineers over to Openreach. The move is designed to help the operator deal with rising local loop unbundling (
LLU) service uptake.
Today ComputerWeekly has reported that Openreach is to receive a second boost in the form of 400 apprentices from early next year:
Openreach is looking for telecommunications engineers aged 16 and over to start their apprenticeships in the summer of 2007. The 400 Openreach jobs will form the majority of the 600-strong intake of apprentices that BT is planning for 2007. The posts will be spread across England, Scotland and Wales.
Openreachs head of apprenticeships Dave Walsh said, The scheme provides opportunities for apprentices to build valuable life skills, academic qualifications and NVQ work experience while forging a career in the rapidly evolving communications industry.
It's also an ingenious way to access a cheaper workforce that's able to deal with the mounting administrative problems of
LLU.
