7digital, a digital media delivery company, has revealed its new range of tailored music download services for UK ISPs to offer their customers. The move is an attempt by the group to capitalise on a recent anti-piracy deal between six of the country's major UK Internet access providers and the music industry (
news).
The service being proposed would allow ISPs to offer music downloads that could then be included in the customers monthly bill, either as part of the subscription fee or as additional payments when music is downloaded. This could also contain special discounts and promotions.
ISPs would also have the choice of effectively managing the service themselves or entering into a partnership with 7digital to handle part of the business:
"ISPs already have existing billing relationships with their customers providing internet access alongside services including e-mail, anti-virus protection and online backup. With legal MP3 sales rocketing and 7digital pioneering the way, we are in a unique position to offer this full suite of services to suit individual ISP's requirements," said Ben Drury, 7digital's CEO.
"It's a natural step for ISPs to offer added value services such as music downloads and streaming to their existing customers. It will help combat churn and attract new subscribers."
It's understood that 7digital is in talks with several UK ISPs about its service, although nothing concrete has emerged about which providers are involved. Sources suggest that the "big six" have at least been contacted about it already.
