Vodafone has extended Spanish trials of its evolutionary 3G
HSPA+
Mobile Broadband technology, which topped 16Mbps downstream last month (
original news), to reach speeds of over 20Mbps in its test environment (upload performance is not stated):
Vodafone networks director Andy MacLeod told
Mobile Today: "
Breaking the 20Mbps peak speed barrier in tests through HSPA+ MIMO is yet another key milestone in the evolution of 3G Mobile Broadband technology, and raises the prospect of higher network performance for our customers in selected hotspots.
These test results mean that we will be able to derive even more value from our existing 3G infrastructure while raising the quality of service for our customers."
The successful trial means that
Vodafone has reached its original HPSA+ goal of hitting roughly 21Mbps, though
HSPA+ has the potential to one day offer download speeds of up to 42Mbps and uploads of 22Mbps.
Naturally ordinary consumers are unlikely to ever see that kind of performance because
Mobile Broadband technologies are considerably more unstable (speed wise) than their land-line counterparts.
