The latest anecdotal broadband speed test results from price comparison site
broadband.co.uk has revealed that
Virgin Media and
O2 (
Be Broadband) are now virtually neck and neck in terms of real world performance.
The Top 10 August 2008 results show that
O2's (
Be Broadband's) lead over Virgin has narrowed to an almost negligible 60kbps. The average over all tests was a download speed of 3.585Mbps, which is a slight drop from July 2008's average of 3.609Mbps:
ISP NAME - Average Download (Average Upload)- Be and O2* - 6.157Mbps (0.849Mbps)
- Virgin Media - 6.097Mbps (0.442Mbps)
- Sky - 3.685Mbps (0.411Mbps)
- Orange - 3.111Mbps (0.350Mbps)
- Talk Talk - 2.576Mbps (0.311Mbps)
- Plusnet - 2.554Mbps (0.361Mbps)
- BT - 2.430Mbps (0.354Mbps)
- Tiscali - 2.291Mbps (0.331Mbps)
- AOL - 1.955Mbps (0.283Mbps)
- Eclipse - 1.490Mbps (0.336Mbps)
However it's noted that While
O2 are holding onto the overall highest average speeds, Virgin come in with the fastest average speeds during the evening and late night periods:
It's interesting to note how some of these results compare to the average download speed of Vodafone's
Mobile Broadband service, which is currently regarded as the markets fastest at 2.3Mbps. Suffice to say,
Tiscali, AOL UK and Eclipse certainly need to work on their performance.
