H2O Networks, a specialist provider of fibre optic networks via the UK's sewer system, is proposing to expand its network across Dundee, Bournemouth or Northampton. The project would take up to two years to complete and could then be rolled out into a further 15 cities.
The sewage network has long been seen by some as a cost effective way of delivering faster (up to 100Mbps) fibre broadband services around urban areas, a fact H2O are keen to exploit. However others feel that the countrys aging Victorian sewer networks, while practical for smaller scale usage, may not hold up to solving national scale problems.
H2O Networks is reportedly already considering agreements with other unnamed ISP's and Internet TV (IPTV) providers for use of the network.
