UK ISP Fast24 is finally getting itself back into working order after almost a full day of downtime. The provider has released a statement blaming the problem on a "deliberate act of vandalism", which has been linked with a hi-tech burglary attempt:
We wish to apologise for today's interruption of service.
The interruption was due to a major connection failure at BT, resulting from a deliberate act of vandalism. It seems that the failures were as a result of a well planned burglary attempt on a major companies central distribution facility, with those responsible attempting to silence any intrusion alarm systems by the cutting of all telecom services to the target building. It seems that all BT cable access points in the locality were opened, and all the cables (fibre-optic & copper) cut. Unfortunately the damage was so extensive that both our primary and back-up connections were severed, accounting for the total loss of connection at our server hosting facility, as well as a total loss of all telecommunication services for all BT customers in the geographic area.
The failure occurred at approx. 1:20 Monday morning and BT have been working on identifying, and rectifying the damage since then. Temporary repairs on our fibres were completed by BT by approximately 21:20 this evening, and permanent repairs, including the installation of many new fibre cables, will be completed by BT over the next few days. No further interruption of service is anticipated whilst these repairs are made by BT.
By implementing a workaround to the problem, utilizing equipment located at a different location, we were able to restore temporary connectivity to our ADSL customers at approximately 15:15 Monday afternoon. Unfortunately no such workaround was possible for our Dial-up or Hosting customers.
Again, we sincerely apologise to all of our customers for any inconvenience that may have been caused as a result of today's service interruption.
